Virtualization Series (1)
Security Series(2)
Looking over the huge number of daily virus/malwares attack complains… We sometimes sit and wonder: “ Haven’t you people heard about VIRTUALIZATION ?! ”
Please don’t take us wrong . It’s just a shout of despair . But you know …”Why make it simple when it can be ( very ) complicated?” We must sadly be aware that most of the people are still using Internet Explorer 6, with its severe security vulnerabilities.
These people will never search for other solutions than an antivirus software .
Hey ! … We’ve got good news ! The virus threat is almost obsolete, nowadays ! Virtualization made it possible. There are a few dozens of quality virtualization solutions out there, based on different principles . We’re glad to be among those who try to promote the most innovative softwares !
We’ll talk about many of them in our Virtualization Series … And we’ll place ahead the “primary triangle” : Sandboxie – Returnil – SVS Altiris. Let’s start by presenting Sandboxie! It is s freeware of course!(otherwise we wouldn’t even bother). Hmmm ! … Its principle is so obvious, simple and effective … Just look at this principle image from Sandboxie main page :

.
- Quote 1: “The illustration shows the key component of Sandboxie: a transient storage area, or sandbox. Data flows in both directions between programs and the sandbox. During read operations, data may flow from the hard disk into the sandbox. But data never flows back from the sandbox into the hard disk.” And there are so many rave reviews ! We got the rare feeling ( when talking about softwares ) that another praise would be useless . We’ll just settle here for enumerating a few official site’s ideas .
- Quote 2: “… you may want to run your Web browser inside the sandbox most of the time. This way any incoming, unsolicited software (spyware, malware and the like) that you download, is trapped in the sandbox. Changes made to your list of Favorites or Bookmarks, hijacking of your preferred start page, new and unwanted icons on your desktop — all these, and more, are trapped in and bound to the sandbox. … Sandboxie intercepts changes to both your files and registry settings, making it virtually impossible for any software to reach outside the sandbox. Sandboxie traps cached browser items into the sandbox as a by-product of normal operation, so when you throw away the sandbox, all the history records and other side-effects of your browsing disappear as well. “ Check-out our Sandbox Control image … If you need a proof that … we’re intensively using Sandboxie !

Better than Returnil I think…
Welcome Kahill !
Yes … and no . As said both Returnil and Sandboxie have different assets .
Sandboxie looks more flexible but it leaves some (small) open doors to a virus .
You must always empty ( delete content ) the sandbox after terminating your operation .
The premium edition - allowing multiple sandboxies - is perfect .
Still : ” Sandboxie can install most applications into the sandbox, but not system software. ”
… While Returnil virtualizes everything . You activate it and leave your kids ( or a guest ) doing whatever they want on your computer .
All traces or dangers will disappear when rebooting .
Amazing tools for slightly different tasks .
Regards !
If you use a huge amount (say 5-10GB) of your free space (disk) to returnil than it becomes harder and longer to defrag your specified disk where you put the box of returnil. I don’t know about sandboxie (didn’t tested it yet) but it looks like more lightweights…
