There can be a fair number of reasons why you wouldn’t need the latest version of a software application on your computer:
.
.
And even when you don’t have any of the above problems, you might face the annoying surprise to find out that your favourite freeware became a … commercial product. That was the case for popular softwares like WinZip and WinRAR (compression softwares), FastStone Capture and SnagIt (screen capture), or Everest Home Edition (system diagnostic).
Of course there is the security upgrade issue that should be carefully analyzed when one decides to install (or to keep) an older version rather than the latest one.
Many software providers do not include older versions on their sites. So where to find those precious oldies-goldies ?
There are 2 serious dedicated websites out there. Even if their Windows Section is very similar we find that both of them are of great importance for the “computer society”.
1. OldVersion.com - first registered on: 31-May-2001 (Alexa traffic rank 20,932) – provides 2479 versions of 182 programs (when we’re writing this article) . You can find here ONLY software for Windows. Programs Support and Requests are available in a solid Forums Section (Threads: 4,410, Posts: 22,459, Members: 15,562)
2. OldApps.com – registered 19-Aug-2005 (Alexa traffic rank 24,139) – provides 2832 Old Versions of 193 programs in the Windows Section … Because it also has a dedicated section for Old Versions of Macintosh softwares providing other 497 Old Versions of 33 programs. The Forum (Threads: 1,190, Posts: 3,920, Members: 3,596) has a nice Articles/ Tips/ Tweaks Section, beside the normal Support and Requests Sections.
We have very much liked the “About Page” conclusion from OldVersions.com: “Lastly, there is a need to archive cultural artefacts. If software is allowed to disappear into the past, a piece of history is lost. People must have access to this data in order to understand the direction of computer industry and civilization as a whole.
