Latest Important News On The Web - April, 20-26 2009

    Tuesday, April 21, 2009
This news item was posted in news category and has 36 Comments so far.

As already said we think this “News Aspect” is very important for the free-oriented community we’re trying to build. So we’ll publish every Monday ( excepting this Tuesday, he, he ) the weekly dedicated article.

The idea is to give to all active members the possibility to instantly add - in comments to this weekly article - a topic they think is very important/interesting ( with links to the article they are proposing ).

So you’ll not have to wait untill Sunday anymore ( and maybe forget an 3-4 days old article ). This way we can all share fresh important information day after day … And the weekly article can be finally loaded of good stuff.

Please remember the conditions :

“ONLY ONE LINK PER READER PER DAY PLEASE !

You must be aware that there will be a severe “quality filter” from the 4 Free Team. Like in the giveaway wishes case,  all proposed articles will “appear” under XXXXX in comments … BUT those we consider real important will be published in updates to the articles list on the main post ( the one you’re reading right now , in this week’s case ), crediting the friend who suggested it.

The participants will have to trust our goodwill . Also they’ll have to put responsable comments if they want to share IMPORTANT INFORMATION … And not “innocent” links to some copy-cat blogg ( like those we are X-ing everyday in comments ).

These are the other “conditions” an article must fulfill :

- Related to “the free” ( news or tips on freewares , important “how to”s , free web services,  etc … )

- Very important news not-related to “the free” but concerning many computers and internet users.

- The site publishing the news should be a serious one. No matter its traffic  or fame size, the site should bring genuine information and work. The “honesty aspect”  is very important for us ( crediting their sources, professional reviews and attitude, etc … )

Please don’t mind if we’ll not publish all proposals. WE APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE ! Be aware that we are the first interested to present to the community THE REAL “most important news”.

This series can become a important contribution of our community to the “free on the web cause” … If we all treat it seriously. It is also another tool we’re giving to the “silent ones” (  + 1200 readers coming here everyday but not participating ) to start saying “I’m here!”.”

Hope more and more friends will find the time to generously and imediately share the most interesting informations by putting the links below - in comments.

Thank you in advance ! Keep in touch !

Who’s with me to support Cleveland Cavaliers?

    ? points ( don’t think Raymond needs points ) :-)
Hi Raymond ! Seeing how LeBron James moves the Cavaliers have big chances for the title this year, imho. Although we’re more Tony Parker here in Europe.
But 70 % of our readers are from US + Canada. So you’ll surely have some Cavaliers fans among them. ( unless they are the silent ones :-) )
    May the best team win!

Hi Peter ! I’ll let the link here just because you’re the one who’s recommending it. ( but not in the main article, sorry!)
It is a good site but not the subject of our article ( ARTICLES on important / interesting NEWS ).
If you ask me the articles on this site are not the most detailed ones, although they are about interesting softwares. Just my opinion.

file sharing sites have been always a problem(wait and other disadvantages).
every now and then a new software comes, but it would stop working in a while. so we

Hi Mayur ! You might be surprised but we’re not accepting that site, although there are many interesting articles on it. It was among our favs at the begining … We have absolutely no problem with the site owners ( or editors ) … Not the smallest discussion or anything similar.
It’s just that we have realized- a few month ago - that they have NEVER credited their sources, during all these years! Again : there’s no software find coming from us on that site and we’re not accusing anybody.
Just that we’re faithful to our principles.
Hope you’ll understand and support us !
    Thank you !

Free Paragon Partition Manager 10 Express from Computeractive:

    http://msn.computeractive.co.uk/vnunet/downloads/2240880/paragon-partition-manager

    2 points
Hi David ! Yep it is the Express version, always free. I quote from Chris Wiles “If you want to do more than create a new partition or resize existing partitions, you’ll need to step up to Paragon Partition Manager 10 Personal, which will delete or copy partitions, migrate drive contents to a new drive, perform a simple drive backup, enable you to create a multi-boot system (for multiple OS use) and much more. You can upgrade within Express for only $39.95.”
I have replaced your link because it was the direct download one. I leave here in your comment the link to the page on Computeractive just in case our friends are interested on this very light version.
    Thank you!

Hi guys ! This is important !
We all know about Conficker but there is also GhostNet.
Quote: ‘GhostNet seems to mark high-profile political and economic targets (known as whaling or spearphishing, as opposed to standard phishing) for infection, accomplishing their goal via social engineering techniques which they use to convince the victim to open an infected email attachment.
During their investigation of GhostNet, IWM determined that the attackers, and the infection itself originated from Chinese IP addresses geographically located on the island of Hainan. It is perhaps worth mentioning that Hainan is home to the Lingshui signals intelligence facility and the Third Technical Department of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.’

Hi, this was passed to me by a friend, he said it was from avira.
It is on Computerbild and others too! i hope none of our deals are affected!
This virus has infected the programs BEFORE you download them it is the developers who got it! Tho maybe people also get it later, it attacks all Delphi written programs.
I was not sure if its real, so i looked on google and also found the same bulletein post on GOTD, so i guess we will have to be more than careful with our downloads than before.

    “Security News
Unusual virus on current free gift CDs
    Tue, 18 August 2009
Harmful files are currently being encountered on free gift CDs issued with popular computer magazines and in download portals. These files infect the source code of development environments.

Tettnang, 18 August 2009 – An unusual virus has been encountered recently, for example on the free gift CD/ DVD issued with the 18/2009 edition of popular computer magazine ComputerBild and in the Chip download portal. The virus infects the source code of Delphi programming environments, so that programs produced using the environment will also infect the programming environments on other computers.

The harmful program changes the “SysConst.pas” file, uses it to compile the “SysConst.dcu” library, having first made a copy of the original named “SysConst.bak”. The copy enables the virus to check that its attack has been successful, preventing another infection. It then deletes the modified “SysConst.pas” file. Programmers should also be suspicious if programs crash with the error message “RunTime Error 3”.

Thank you for letting us know !
Regarding our articles … We always test those promoted softwares, starting with the antivirus scanning.

google image downloader from Ghacks looks a useful little tool which is portable too.
It enables  you to download pictures from Google image search so that you can sort them out yourself. Useful for me as a teacher when I’m looking for visual prompts and can’t be bothered to check every site.
Just download the lot and sort out the one(s) you want
