POKATreader EXECUTIVE ( worth $ 57 ) - 4 Free

Hi friends!
We hope your weekend started in a best possible manner .

A brief info on the growing community : there were 164 notification emails. Welcome to the new active friends and …  Sorry for the old friends who were inactive the last two weeks ! ( you know what you have to do to be back on the list ) :-)

Like always we take the opportunity to thank to :
- all active friends who understand how important it is to talk about the softwares we find in promotions;
- all 4 Free readers, in general. Their interest in our site and community honours us.
- other site’s owners who are honestly crediting our community work ( when this is the case )

Today we’ll talk about a few month old ( and “expired”) promotion for POKATreader EXECUTIVE ( normally sells for US$57 ).

We have already said the today’s “PDF-related” find is maybe not a “must have PDF tool”. It is not a PDF creator or editor ( like our other finds eXpert PDF V 4 or V 5 ) … But a innovative PDF reader, document manager and printer.

We think this software - and the executive version especially - has some interesting features, starting with the obvious handy “Flip-Style” Java viewer.

According to the publisher POKATreader EXECUTIVE is :

"The perfect presentation and document management tool. Read PDF files as "Flip-Style"publications by one click of a button... as simple as that.
Document Management - No matter where your PDFs are sitting on your computer, automatically adds your files its Library. Instantly access your pdf files.
Is great for:  newsletters, books reports documents magazines, catalogues product guides business, plans annual reports periodicals, journals legal works... AND SO MUCH MORE"

.

.

.

FEATURES

# Drag and drop a PDF file into POKATreader and the software automatically delivers a new “Flip-Style” reading experience.
# Auto Library - access all your PDF files from one location
# One-Click library backup
# Delete bookmarks
# In-Page, One-Click-Zoom
# Change Skin (background colour) to suit publication (great for presentations)
# Goto (specific) page

# One Click single page print
# Print range of pages
# Print entire publications

What are the extra features you get with this Executive version ?

- Library restore
- Bookmark pages for easy reference
- One-Click Go to bookmarks
- Delete and/or rename bookmarks
- eMail single page, page range or entire pdf
- In page Functions
- eMail current page
- Add or delete highlights on a page
- Text copier. Just select the area
- Notes feature (add, edit or delete note/s)

POKATreader is developed using the JAVA development platform and is required to either be installed or updated. This is a Trusted program and should be allowed by your firewall.

Our conclusion : A very handy PDF reader, with a good number of interesting features. Both the flip-style reader and the PDF management parts work great. Certainly a good solution to read multiple pages PDFs on a laptop, and not only. Very comfortable!

How to grabb POKATreader Executive for free ?

1. Go to this promotion page and write your email address and names :

http://pokat.net/pokat/download.do?tabid=1&method=showDownloadHome&pub=PCUser

( copy and paste in your browser )

2. Check your email inbox for a first message from POKAT. Click on the confirmation link.

3. You’ll arrive again on a POKAT page where you must fill in again your email address ( the same, of course )

4. Get your license key and the download link from the second message in your inbox.

5. Download and run the installer. Use your licence key to register. That’s it !

.

.

Important note 1 ( from the second email ):
1. You MUST be online to activate POKATreaderEXECUTIVE
2. Do not share this Key with anyone as it can only be used once.

Important note 2 : it looks like ( strangely ) the publisher’s site has no valid security certficate. If your browser ( Firefox in our case ) will block the download link ( the one received in your email ) for this reason … Just add pokatreader’s site as an exception and you will be able to download it.

Enjoy!

4 Free Team wishes a perfect weekend to all our readers!

Key applied for and have yet to see it, Took 3 time with their stupid punch code. wish people would learn to not use O-0, I-l when setting these up. I know it’s not a 4 free problem just using this time to vent while waiting for them to awaken with my request. Bad thing I’m not sure if it is something I’ll use until the key arrives

I’ve done 1 and 2. 3 has to wait because I’m updating Adobe and it needs the files. =P I meant that the instructions worked as stated. step by step. It seems that more software promotions are requiring email activation first, eh? Most of the promotions previously send the license key straightaway.

I downloaded it and received the emails. But when I launch the program after installation I get an error message “Could not initialised (sic) security settings. Please restart computer and reinstall application”. This I have done, and ran it as Administrator, but I still get the same error message. Quel dommage, as it looks so good.

    Fun.
Not really impressed though. On the contrary!

1/ Regarding the main and mostly only innovative feature - the flip style reading - it’s part of the freeware version.

2/ Very long to launch as it need to start all the java runtime machine.

3/ Pdf reading experience is quite convenient and smooth.

4/ Totally disappeared, windows and process, as soon as I tried to highlight something.

5/ When I try to reload the same file, it identifies that it is in its library. I allow it to launch it from library, as it offers me the choice between library or ranaming the file to open it again! High CPU usage for, what?, 10 or 15 sec, then nothing.

6/ By the way, I dislike these “library” features… I know where I putting my files (and if I forget google desktop is much more convenient and flexible than any library I could build) so I wish I could deactivate both the library in POKAT Reader and the library auto-feed.

7/ Third try with the same pdf file and selecting rename and open. Nothing. POKAT fully disappeared once again… Oh well…

8/ Same problem with another PDF… highlighting => shutting off !

9/ I guess it’s useless I say I don’t like online activation when the prog is coming from unknown software editors as I wouldn’t like to reinstall this piece of software very often.

10/ I guess it’s useless to say that’s it’s over priced as it’s already being uninstalled from my computer.

11/ Just be careful. When googling “pokat reader” the first result seems to be a harmful site (from google.fr)… Steer away from url like this one : http://www.wellknownsite.com.something.com as the true site here is something.com, and it’s trying to lure you into thinking you’re going to http://www.wellknowsite.com
    Not POKAT fault anyway.

12/ POKAT isn’t very clear regarding it’s webhosting I must say.
    The website is pokat.nat
But the download is from pokatreader.com. As the download use https (why the hell ?) it requires a certificate, and it’s missing. Hum…
And just try this domain with standard http… You’ll arrive to a PLESK message inviting you (or so to say the owner of the domain) to upload his website…
    Quite unclear…

So in a nutshell : an innovative software (pdf flipping is a good idea), poorly developed, and coming from rather unknown and unclear editor.
Coming from here I’m quite sure it’s clean… but nevertheless I regret a little bit I did take the risk.

In the current state of this app, the only reason it would deserve publicity is tipping open source /freeware developer with this nice flipping idea. That’s it.

For what I can say, it’s the most disappointing shareware tips found here, even if you’re not the one to blame.

    Have a nice week-end everybody.

    5 points
    Hi Franck !
I agree with most of your arguments. A software obviously poorly developed !
    I have 4 general answers :

Regarding the main and mostly only innovative feature - the flip style reading - it’s part of the freeware version.

    1. YES ! … But the freeware version is still THEIR version.

    2. PCAdvisor would have never promoted a problematic software ( from the security point of view ).
    3. It’s just a find - like you have said. It was “hot” because nobody talked about it before and there is always the danger of missing it when becoming too popular. ( nobody likes that )
    4. You will be surprised to see that a few 4 Free’ers ( and not only ) will like it . ( if they have computers fast enough for the java presentation )

    Just my thoughts.
    Regards!

The great thing about listing a wide variety of software is that just about everyone will find something they like/need; and occasionally someone with a very narrow focus might come across something surprising which fits their situation. [That's my attempt to say, "Not for me, but thanks anyway; I sure appreciate all you folks do.]

    Strange ???
If I click highlight and click the colour its suddenly disappear (the program close), If I want to save my notes its also disappears! Also if I click email - the same things happened!
If someone had the same problem with me please let me know. I’m going to give another shot and let you know the result. Maybe.. just maybe.. There is a bug with the registration key… since there is no sign I’m at the executive one and not the free one!

This tool sounds very nice. I have never tested it before. Is it possible to read online pdf files in it? Does it has any add-ons for firefox or IE? (could not find answers at site).
BTW, I think, it is useful when I will use it on my 18.4″ Acer 8920G. (I am smilling :) ). Thank You again.

It’s true their site is very poor. I do not think they have developed add-ons.
It can be very useful on laptops, especially if they’re fast . Java requires fast CPUs.

I am thinking of passing on this one. Most of the features this has are already there somewhere in the system:
    1. Library: Windows explorer, that additionally includes other files too. (Just for example, I save the source URL of each PDF I download into the same folder as the PDF itself.)
    2. Library backup: Usual backup solutions, many from 4 Free!
    3. PDF reader with usual features: Acrobat Reader itself, many others.
3a. PDF with “flip-style” yeah!: But do you care how pages flip?!

If you are maintaining a public library of thousands of e-books and want external visitors looking at the PDFs, then this becomes a good solution. You do not want external people to be using Windows Explorer to manage the PDFs.

I certainly do not see this software as worth $57 (oh well, I am not downloading even with the free offer!)

Yes..all is working well now.,no shutdowns etc…..it would not even load at first until I went into my firewall (online Armor) and allowed full access to 2 java exe
    javaw.exe
    jre-6u14-windows-i586.exe
Please note that these 2 files firewall rules were set at ask……I changed the rules to allow and the program registered immediately and hasnt missed a beat…admittedly it is a bit slow but that is only cause my puter isnt powerful.

Thanks for trying 4Free, but I must say this is one of the worst programs I have ever run across. Slooooooow and not very well assembled. It’s coming off the PC and only pray it done no harm
    Sage

    1 point
I’m sure you always create a Restoration Point before installing any new app. Then it’s very simple and you do not have to “pray it done no harm”.
And maybe you use Revo Uninstaller for better uninstalls. ( if you do not revert through system Restoration )
Otherwise the best for safe trials are the virtualization solutions like : Returnil, Sandboxie, Altiris SVS , etc …

    http://for-free-on-internet.com/2008/10/altiris-svs-%E2%80%93-no-more-dll-and-registry-hell-2/
Altiris SVS is my fav - allowing permanent activity of most softwares in virtualized layers. You activate and deactivate them whenever you want ( plus export on any other new OS )
    Hope that helps.

Using java will certainly make it slower than a normal PDF reader. But you gain in comfort.

I would like to make a suggestion, If you all are going to be downloading and installing a bunch of new software, use protection. I use a progie called Sandboxie, It runs the new progie in a box and when done you delete the box or allow changes to remain.Google it and check for your self. Mod if this isn’t cool, just do the XXXXXX thing or delete. :)

    Why wouldn’t I like it ? :-)
We have always praised virtualization solutions. Obviously you’re not reading our older articles ( just looking for new sharewares for free hehe :-) )
This is what I have just answered to Sage and I hope all our friends are aware about this procedures:

Installation no problems using your instructions. It looks like a good concept. Much more like reading a book. Problem is, too buggy to use. Just about every operation I carry out apart from viewing the document closes the program down. e.g. I do a word search, close the search window, POKAT shuts down (crashes). It’s a good idea, but very poorly executed.

No reflection on you, the program to me is unusable. Will wait for next promo instead. Cheers

have used it, it opens the npdf page like a book reading and also the page changes with very good coling sound it is useful for big pdf files am talking abt. the free version of this not the professional which been tols here, the down side is that java runtime to be installed and also whwenver you open a pdf file it has some unique tendencies to store it in its installation folder, so manually delete to be done otherwise system will be culttered ,it is a good reader with clean and smooth interface.

After installation it also crashed several times on my pc. an when trying to open an pdf ebbok (for the “best reading experience”) Pokat informs me, that it is unable to open encrypted an password protectected files. Well spotted, but not for me, sorry. Adobe Reader (+ full Acrobat on work laptop) + Paperport (free with scanner) seems to cover this adequately. Not looking for new tools which duplicate existing functionality, with the associated learning, disk and maintenance overhead, but new functionality. Congrats on the spot anyway. Regards Stephen

Guys sorry but I cant say my pc/laptop is slow.. ;p 2.4 GHz Intel, GeForce 8600gt and 3GB of RAM.. but I just checked it again and seems like it works well, but only for simple (text and very little images). If You ry with big and complex pdfs ifs crawling. I do understand why but they could introduce some caching (at least next page or two). Also it has some bugs (try cancelling when You are in “Organize Library”).
On the other hand it has some interesting features like bookmarks or highlights but when I try selecting colours crashes again, same with notes and bookmarks so I couldn’t even try these. I’m using Vista SP1 32bit so there should be no such problems.
In overall interesting but a bit useless for now until these bugs persist, but thanks.

Hi! Dave gaved us this promotion a few month ago.
Now it’s already popular. You have probably seen it on Raymond

Not a HF but we appreciate your intentions, anyway!

I have got to agree with some of the others. For me,download and installation was faultless following your instructions. However,I too found the program buggy, and crashing everytime I tried to open the library it created.I certainly found the ‘Flip Style’ feature of it handy, but I was getting annoyed at the programs instability so I have now uninstalled it.

    Hi guys!
Despite all the above critics I like this app. No bugs on my installation.
    It works like a charm.
I like the concept and I feel comfortable when reading PDFs in a book-style.
I appreciate all feedbacks but I think one should try the software on his computer ( if he needs a PDF reader ). Maybe it will work, like it’s working great in my case !
    Cheers!

    Hi guys!
For me it’s a keeper. It has some bugs forthe files management features but the innovative reader works great. I hope the developer will soon upgrade it and fix the bugs.
Thank you for a very interesting find !

after a wrong move on the keyboard lost a 20 lines review, as always. Did not have time to ctrl+C. Was only missing : tks again! Now I’ll be cryptic.
Install OK. Although firewall inactive it still didn’t like internet connection for registration(strange).
Soft doesn’t adjusts it size to taskbar on the right so can’t see page forward button which stays under it. Speed OK. Everything else kills it. Flipping OK, but too small letters for sore eyes. Do it’s good only for fast reading, when one flips pages until finds something interesting, and then increases size to read it. Still not sure it’s a keeper. Time will tell. Tks in top of comment!

Thanks 4Free for all of the software and info!!

Nice PDF idea here… but one problem I didn’t like…

It installs Crypkey services that are set to run on your computer automatically at all times, even when the program is not running. I assume this is for the program’s key activation, but a google search even mentioned “spyware.” I admit… I didn’t read the EULA, but I see no other mention of this being installed.

I uninstalled the product, however the crypkey services were NOT removed! They were still running! It wasn’t difficult to remove though. I just did a search to remove the files, and searched the registry for entries and removed them.

TIP: If you would to keep this software, change the crypkey service to “manual.” It will run when you open POKATreader. (Although it still won’t close if you close POKAT reader, but it’s better than it running automatically all of the time)

Hi Chaps Installed fine, but too much of a resource hog/ hanging for my liking. It was slower to use than Acrobat - and that says something. Also resolution on some pdf’s made it difficult to read - perfectly ok in Acrobat. Thanks for opportunity to try though.

I couldn’t get my installation to work until I un-installed it, deleted the POKAT directory on Program Files, and ran the installation from my Administrartor Account.

    Thanks for the interesting application.

This looks like an innovative idea but requiring Java would mean slow PC for me, and going by the reviews above, will be skipping this. There was an article up on makeuseof.com discussing free light pdf alternatives to adobe reader. Maybe someone will find these useful in the future? Link here: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/a-quadruple-of-light-alternatives-to-adobe-reader/ . Thanks for introducing something I have never heard of before though. :) Cant wait for the next surprise hot find!

I have just discovered this website in the last few days. Great work! Thankyou …. Doug

Thanks for the excellent free tool.
The email with key and download link arrived, the download a HTTPS link without a valid cert. Has anyone experienced problems following download from this site?

You’re among the few saying they like it and it’s working.
The HTTPS invalid certificate was described in the article.

Doug, I don’t understand your problem… If you use virtualized environment to test software, you can have two virtualized OS, a 32 bit and a 64bits.
    I understand you have vista 64bits. That’s one…
Don’t you have an old copy of XP that came with a computer? (I suppose your XP, if you have one, will be a 32bits, XP 64bits is not so widely spread).

That said, if I were you, I wouldn’t spend time for trying this crappy piece of software…

I wonder if the developer reads your comments Franck.
