Ashampoo Office 2008 for Windows - 4 Free Again

Hi friends!

As announced in our HF mail ( welcome to + 20 active members ! ) we have found another promotion for Ashampoo Office 2008 ( the last one - published on May 2nd - lasted just a few days ).

But there are + 25 000 newcomers on 4 Free since May 2nd so let’s give them a chance to decide if they grab this qualitative software or not.

To be ourselves we must admit that we have found it while looking over some non-English blogs. We would normally have had no problem to credit one or more of them but these guys never credit their own sources. And when we see on their sites ALL finds from 4 Free published a few hours ( or the second day ) after our articles … Ignoring them is all we can do.

... Unless they start respecting our community .( but in an honest and adult way, not like some retarded who’s stupidly adding his watermaks on our screenshots )

We’re writing this because we know who these guys are . They are frequently thanking us in comments but it proves that they forget to do it for real. Their reasons are obvious but they surely do not understand something: when you think and act small you will remain small all your life.

It’s really a shame to see their work ( because we can see they are working and trying to make an Adsense buck ) spotted by the copy-cat reputation they will get sooner or later.

Whoever they are, whatever they’ll choose to do, we wish them good luck with their internet activity and real life, anyway !

.

Back to Ashampoo Office 2008 ! We have briefly talked about it in our previous article. Mike(sNote) also helped us with a short review, which we have then added in the last part of our article.

The general reaction in comments was a very good one and the main conclusions are:

- Ashampoo Office 2008 ( worth € 59,99 ) is a very reliable and ( most important ) lighter on resources alternative to M$oft Word AND Open Office.

- it’s nothing but the rebranded-but-identical version of the acclaimed SoftMaker Office 2008 ( worth US$ 79.95 )

Ashampoo Office 2008 is supplied with the word processing tool Ashampoo TextMaker, the spreadsheet program Ashampoo PlanMaker and – brand new in the current version – the presentations software Ashampoo Presentations.

.

.

4 Free is about giving our feedbacks on the softwares from the free promotions.  So , hoping that we’ll have more tech reactions in comments, here’s again Mike’s feedback from the previous article:

—– General —–

– This is the latest version 3.10. (I used the “FREE FULL activation” English link in the “Let’s start with the killer offer!” section near the bottom of Radu’s “Ashampoo: They Trick You, You Trick Them” page.)
– The testimonials at the SoftMaker site the guys listed above indicate this is a very good app. CNet”s Download.com shows a high user rating of 4/5 for 151 votes, with many comments.
– Memory useage tested with same .doc file: OpenOffice ~70 MB, TextMaker ~16 MB. (OO may shed ~20 MB after some time.)
– Installation size (main directory): OpenOffice ~400 MB, Ashampoo Office 2008 ~83 MB. (OO includes Draw, Math, and Base which are modules not included in Ash.)
– I did find that each of the 3 modules started quite fast.
OpenOffice users that must open complex Excel documents may want to consider this app. See the comparisons for Excel/PlanMaker/OpenOffice 2.3 at Softmaker.com. I downloaded the files that OO 2.3 had problems with and tried them in my OO 3.0.1, and it still does not display them properly.

—– Compatibility with OpenOffice —–

– The Ashampoo link says that it also reads/exports OpenDocument formats, which are used by OpenOffice. But I found it opened only .odt (word processor) files, and not .ods (spreadsheets). I didn’t have any presentation files to test.
– I opened one of my logs which is basically a long 3-column table of date/time/activity. Many activity items include multi-level bulleted lists. The bullets and levels were not imported, which was a dealbreaker for this use.

I don’t use MS Office, so I couldn’t test compatibility, but comments and press indicate it’s pretty good.

.

I saw this promo posted elsewhere on 27 Jun 2009. Unlike the previous Ashampoo Office 2008 giveaway which handed out the same registration key to everyone, the installation of this one in your computer can only be activated by a specific combination of your name, email and serial number as they gave you, case to case basis.

Thank you 4Free Team for bringing this out!

    Hi Mei!
I know it’s already on non-English sites. It’s not important anyway.
We have highlighted it for our readers.

Actually, I use MS-Office so I don’t really need this one. Surely MS wins when it’s about opening doc and docx files (for sure!). Using 2007, I wouldn’t go back to any app without this great office ribbon.

That said, Ashampoo Office 2008 looks good and sounds promising. I’m not using OpenOffice either, for the same reasons.
But maybe OpenOffice/starOffice could tell us? after trying for some hours/days how it compares.
Surely comparisions between Ashampoo and OpenOffice are much more relevant than the Ashampoo/MS ones…

    Good night everybody!

You’ve had no activity between June O1 and 24 but this is an too old story because you have obviously reappeared since.

Got this one last time around. Many businesses are still using Office 2003 and this is a good free and compatible alternative to that package. It can trade files with Office 2007 if saved in the proper version format. Thanks again for the effort guys, but I’ll get out of the way of anyone who really needs it.

This is indeed a great offer. I searched for a few reviews and most
of them really gives a positive impression about this office package.
The best one and also the fastest to watch/read I could find was at:

    I hope it helps.
Since I already have M$Office and my wife already uses OpenOffice
it´s kind of too many alternatives at home right now. :)

I’ll pass on this one also for the simple reason I already own it…

I think everybody should get this software, first because it is an excellent one and second because we may put it on a USB drive and take it everywhere with us, what we can’t do with almost all other softwares of that kind, except maybe OpenOffice but which is much slower than this one.

Cool! I *almost* bought the Office suite for $4.99 a couple of weeks ago, via a direct email received from Ashampoo. At the last minute I decided not to, and now it looks like I’ve saved myself a whole €3.60 (approx.) … at least I will have if my serial number ever arrives! :-)

I changed from Go Open Office to Softmaker 2006 a few weeks ago due to Go being slow and at times unresponsive.Softmaker was so much faster and lighter that I have stuck to it.So when I saw this HF I grabbed it quick as you wrote,it is basically identical to Softmaker 2008.I had no problems opening odp and odt files but haven’t tested it on ods files. and unlike Open Office doesn’t rely on java.
I would recommend everyone reads Mike’s comments.
If you haven’t got MS Word I would get this over any of the free programs.
Thanks for the second chance guys.

You should try SSuite Office for a free office suite. They have a whole range of office suites that are free for download that will meet all your demands. Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, so it makes the software very small and efficient.

    You can try these links:

I am a home user of Ashampoo 2008 gathered from a previous promotion. I do not use the Presentation package and I only use the occasional spreadsheet for personal use so I do not have to worry about compatiblity with MS Office. I do however need to transfer Word (2003) documents between home and work and I have never had a single problem even with complex documents, so from my point of view it works perfectly, being very light and fast and taking up very little disk space. The only time I needed to deal with a docx file I used one of the online file converters.

This article from Infoworld about Softmaker Office would suggest that there is still a way to go as regards the Spreadsheet.
    http://www.infoworld.com/d/applications/better-office-alternative-softmaker-office-bests-openofficeorg-445

Their test of the 2009 beta which includes Office 2007 compatibility seems to be more successful - I look forward to seeing the 2009 version in a future promotion!

My conclusion: if you don’t need compatibility, grab it you won’t go wrong. If you do need to be compatible then you need to make a judgement based on what your needs are.

I Installed it, got my key(s) and must say: WOW!!!

I bought the package of Softmaker Office 6 weeks ago for discounted price in a shop.
I find it very astounding that they are giving away their really good Office Suite for free.now the second time. Maybe this promo will last only for a short while, but more likely it willl stay longer cause probably Office 2009 is coming out soon.

The only differences between “Ashampoo Office” and Softmaker Office” I noticed:
    1. one is named “Ashampoo Office” other “Softmaker Office”, look and program interface is almost identical
updates for Softmaker Office work on Ashampoo Office too
    2. there is no “Duden Deutsches Universalwoerterbuch and “Das grosze Fremdwoerrterbuch” integrated. (mostly interesting for german speaking mates)
    3. license policy is different, Softmaker needs no registration and gives a full licence for 3 PCs (commercial too)

Maybe it is not really clear for everybody: that this version is MULTILINGUAL !!!! (look at pictue above)
it supports many different languages (Deutsch, English, Francais, Italiano, Espanol, Portuges, Niederlands, Magyar, Türce, Russian…)

I use it parallel to Open Office 3.0 which is also very interesting but much huger and eating more system ressources, so it is ideal for Netbooks and Laptops.. For me I see now no more furhter need to use any MS Office though it finally has become cheaper, but only for private usage! The Sofmaker license is guklty for 3 PCs without any registering, for every kind of usage, commercial or private. The Ashampoo license do not say any specific so I think you need one license per installation. No problem considering that you can obtain as many licenses as you want now for free. So go and get it!!!!

No need for this one,but I would like to comment on my experiences with Ashampoo going back nearly two years.I’ve tested many of their products, and though not satisfied with some, there are a couple that I still run on two rigs to date. One of the biggest complaints I read about them as a company is the tendency to “spam you to death”. Well regarding that, you might want to read that “spam” because it contains many freebies and deep discounts on their products. There have been “name your own price” offers and special coupons for your birthday should you decide to fill in the profile page. They take this a step further by keeping track of every offer they’ve ever notified you of via their “Service Letter” section of your account(keep that number handy)with the option to act on those previous offers at any time.Ashampoo also makes available a comprehensive list of all utilities you’ve installed or are currently using complete with expiration dates and registration codes. A recent free promotion of their Core Tuner came with an instant “upgrade” of Win Optimizer 6,a nice little tune up utility.I’m not advocating you load your rig with their products, but suggesting you look at some of the offers for the software,as some have proved very useful to me for very little or no money. Thanks again Team for your efforts, and thanks to all of you who share your opinions and experiences in this great little community.Be well friends

This is really funny for me…To be honest, I had actually known about this ‘promo’ long time before you guys publish it today…I have no idea about this being published elsewhere before even if it is on non-english sites…I actually sort of ”discovered” it on my own…I tried using the previous ‘promo’ that 4freeteam published on May 2nd but unfortunately, it didn’t work for me…
I downloaded the setup file from http://download16.ashampoo.com/m/ashampoo_office2008_310_fm.exe and ”accidentally discovered” that there is a register button that brings me to this site: http://www.softmaker.de/reg/ash08_en.htm where anyone can get the license key for free…

Indeed, I can say for the first time I found a ‘promo’ before 4freeteam…that’s a big achievement but I regret for not being the one who shared it with you guys…

I am using the big weight MS office and i got Ashampoo key from
the previous promo. Anyhow i installed last time, but didn’t tried it
for a long time. In that short time, i found these things.

    pros
    1) Its lightweight is the main advantage and its fast too.
2)Easy to use and learn and it is more or less similar to MS office.
3)Well i didn’t experience any compatibility issues with MS Office.
    Its fine !!
4)As everyone knows it can be used from a USB. According to me
this is the best point about this product.
5)Can save word documents as PDF.

    cons
1)Well may not be a powerful tool to some.
2)I couldn’t drag photos directly to file,Letter templates are poor,
Animation effects are poor - Like this some simple things are
    missing.
3)I think there is no alternative to MS Access. An alternative
    would have been better.

So in my opinion you can use it as a portable application.
So i would stick with MS office for my PC.

You were right, the email *had* landed in GMail’s Spam folder! For some reason GMail flagged it as possible phishing message, warning not to click the links because they may not be from the sender of the mail!

Another reason I initially missed the message was because I usually register for special offers, like this one, using an *alternative* GMail address. That email is configured to automagically forward everything to my *real* GMail account, except in this case the mail was trashed before it ever left!

So the moral of this story is: always remember to login to your alternative email accounts every so often, just in case something you’re waiting for happens to end up in the spam folder!

    John

PS Are there problems with the comments section? Recently almost *every* time I try to post a comment I receive an error

Of course when I hit “back” my message is gone and I have to start again, but the second attempt usually works (*this* is my second attempt, but this time I’m going to make a copy of the message _before_ hitting “send comment”! :-) )

As I had mentioned in the previous Ashampoo Office 2008, I had purchased it. As Alan put it down, it is repackaged version of the German software Softmaker Office 2008. I recently received an e-mail from the SoftMaker giving the link Alan provided showing that Ashampoo (SoftMaker) Office 2008 has better compatibility with MS Office 2007 than OpenOffice. I have both Ashampoo and OpenOffice. When it comes to using tracking feature of ‘Word’, I prefer OpenOffice.

But I would like to point to the fact till the recent years everyone was doomed to use MS Office legally or illegally. I had paid 150 $ for MS Office 2000 when I was student. Even a free word processor was hard to find. Now we have a number of free Office suites and even compare them now between each other. Well, I extend my respect and gratitude to everyone who provides free stuff to people either by freeware, open-source programs or by providing free promotions.

    All the best.

a good alternative,i am using 2006 version to view MS documents, and openoffice to create documents.i think is a good option as home user,as long as you don’t need to create somthing complex

I’ve tried getting this for free maybe twice before, but kept ending up in a 30d trial. Support said the registration would work after 30d, but it didn’t. I e-mailed Ashampoo, and they sent me a snippy response that said something like “You know this software costs MONEY, right??” (I didn’t respond.)

THIS one just WORKED, so THANKS!

    Norm

P.S. I’ve given up on my HotPOP e-mail address, which I used here before.

Got the key and downloaded yesterday
Was going to skip until I saw the ability to install on a usb drive
Now it resides on my 16Gb, along with the dictionaries and SoftMaker upgrade
I did have to copy the Softmaker folder from the My documents folder of my pc to the usb drive in order to put the bullets/templates/designs etc in a place where they would be available - just have to point to them from the program to access
If you take it to another pc, it asks to install the necessary files - creates a SoftMaker folder on that pc.
I’m happy with it - thanks to the community for finding it and the team for publishing it!

Hi guys. I use Ashampoo Office 2008 for some time already and completely happy with it. What I most like about it-it is not so bloated like MS or Open Office suites and besides one can easily run it from an USB stick.

Another difference between this version and the original (Softmaker) one, is that the latter has support for VBA Macro and this one has not…
But, having this for free…. is really really good! Thanks 4Free!!
P.s. any chance to have the VBA Macro support? ;)

    2 points
Hi! You’re right about that difference.
… Very possible in a future promotion.

Many thanks for this. I’ve struggled with OpenOffice’s cuymbersome interface and, in my experience, poor Word compatibility long enough to have given it up. This is a substantially complete alternative to MS Office, with minor quirks.

There’s no seperate word count feature, though you can get a word count along with other statistics. And there’s no way to individually set the preferences for ruler units: the program decides based on your location. If you’re in Canada, this means the ruler shows metric units and you can’t change to inches. I also find the look of the interface unappealing, and would have been happy to see a macro function. Although there is no Canadian English dictionary, there is a Canadian French one in the supplemental download that comes with your registration number (by email).

However, it does perform strongly, is very quick and feature-rich and so far seems truly compatible with Word formats. Extremely useful, thanks guys for the great work

I’ve discovered there is a seperate word count feature. There’s a toolbar for Statistics which gives counts for words, paragraphs, kestrokes and pages. Also, you can customize toolbars to add these commands to any other - inclusing the Status bar at the bottom of the window.

    great program.

I tried out the office suite a few days ago and I must say, I was impressed.

The software loaded quickly, it didn’t take up too much room on my drive, and the software was very easy to use due to the similar interface. I’m running it on my laptop from 2001 (ThinkPad T23 / Windows XP Professional). However, the feature I love with this software as opposed to the other suites is that I can access PlanMaker and Presentations from TextMaker.

I’m impressed with the software giveaways found on this website.

Really nice software, works beautifully on Windows 7. I’m considering installing it on the new computer I’m getting instead of giving up a few hundred bucks on MS Office.

One small issue I have with this software, however, is the conversion of complex macro-ridden MS Excel Tables into PlanMaker. It was eventually able to open the files, but only after 3 or so minutes.
    Still a keeper, though!
