HF 23 coming! Security Stuff !

    Wednesday, July 1, 2009
This news item was posted in news category and has 88 Comments so far.

Hi friends !

Yup! This ( a security software ) is a first in our HF history .

And another first time : looking over the new friends who have shared their software giveaway wishes, the HF notification list should pass the 200 active members “psychological mark”. ( unless there will be some cuts for inactive older members )

Anyway, silent or active friends … Stay tuned!

Reminder

We hope that all our readers have understood the reasons why we’re using the HF procedure, trying to give first access to our readers ( through the email pre-notification system )  :
- When the software found in a free promotion is very important …
- AND / OR  no other sites ( or very few ) have mentioned the found promotion …
- AND / OR  the download is very slow and it is advisible to be among the first to download …
- AND / OR  a sudden popularity of the registration and download links will force the owners to stop the promotion.

As always recently active members ( one simple Hello in the last 2 weeks  ) will receive email notifications ( please be sure you are qualified for the pre-notification by simply  sharing your software giveaway whises HERE ). You have seen that it’s always better to be among the first to register and download!

Mmmm, let me think… I see often requests for Norton products but I think it’s not this… what else?
May be some Firewall? I use Kerio in shareware version after 3 years as subscriber… may be a free year promotion? Stay tuned…

Hi ! It is a 1 year licence key but not for Kerio.

One year licences are not particularly useful, to me at least. The user gets accustomed to how the program works, has it tweaked to perfection, and then has to face: either (a) buy the licence for the next year; or (b) start all over with something completely different.
If I’m going to pay for an ongoing licence, I’m far, far better off choosing the very best program available in the first place, rather than one that was cheap (free) for the first year, which is just a marketing gimmick to get me hooked. If I don’t want to pay for an ongoing licence, I’m better off choosing a good freeware or open source program.
Either way, a free one year licence is a bad way to go.

    1 point
    Hi Bruce!
Most security solution are using the 1 year licence selling method… Mainly due to the virus/adware/malware base upgrade service.

“Choose the very best … rather than one that was cheap (free) for the first year”

It seems that Kaspersky is the most appreciated solution. But it is also the one you can find most frequently in free promotions for 1 year/ 6 month licence keys.
So - according to your theory - Kaspersky is crap because you can grabb it in free promotions.:-)
Anyway the HF is not about Kaspersky.
    Regards!

Hurry Up! I am fan of security software. I always play with them. My best is BitDefender but now I wanna crack BullGuard. If there is Kaspersky, WoW, it would be great. Norton uncle is not well now a days cuz 3 years ago he ate lots of system resources so his stomach is still aching. McAfee is on business tour to expand his business. He will take time to look after. Better is any one but good one. Waiting….

RE: “Choose the very best program available in the first place, rather than one that was cheap (free) for the first year.” It may very well be that the best program is available for a short period with a free promotion. Nothing I wrote indicated otherwise. The focus is “Choose the very best program available in the first place” - period.

Nevertheless, it seems to me that the very top malware programs NEVER give their products away. I’m thinking of ESET Nod Antivirus and Norton Internet Security. [Note to those who want to jump in and say that Norton is junk, it clogs up your system and slows it to a crawl, etc. That was true for their products up to 2008. Their 2009 version is vastly different, and is winning all kinds of "Editor's Choice" awards for a reason. Make sure your information is current.] The exception to this are the excellent free firewall products from Online Armor and Comodo.

Hi, I have the same problem as Ceylan (I haven’t received any email stating that HF 23 is coming)..

anyway.. If we are talking about an antivirus, I’d like to have Norton Antivirus 2009 or GData
If we are speaking about a firewall, then I’d like to see Online Armor Personal Firewall 3.5.0.14 which is a top-notch product..

About a virtualization/sandboxie, Returnil would be really nice to have!

In any case… thank you! :)

    Security?
Wasn’t drive backup a security app already?

If it’s the first, it surely means it’s an antivirus/firewall/internet security suite.
In this domain, I would trust only the top-notch and/or already widely known : Kaspersky, Trend Micro (maybe not the best currently but the one I currently have), BitDefender.

I’m not so eager to give a try to new-comers… Hard and unfair world…
Quite the same for Norton, Bruce… Leader for many years, and some rests on its laurels, Norton turned into crapware.
You say v2009 is a good product. Good. If Norton is back to quality software, maybe I’ll accept to give v2011 a try…
It’s hard to buid a program reputation. It’s even harder to rebuild it…

Considering your answer to mayur, I’ll surely skip this one.HF :(
    I’ll see anyway when it’s released !
    Cheers !

    2 points
    Hi Franck!
    You’re very logical like always.
All I can add is: this software developer is among the serious ones … And it has one or two innovations - their own technology.
Giving a closer look is our way to respect the developer’s work.
Most HFs give us oportunities to learn new things, even if we decide to not keep them.
    I’m sure you agree.
    Cheers!

Sure… My list wasn’t exhaustive anyway.
Just regarding security meaning antivirus and firewall, I wouldn’t even try some unknown security suite. For instance, I always steer clear of GOTD offers in this domain.

But for sure, I’m willing to discover new things… Not working in the IT field, the few I know, I learnt it through blogs, new software…
As a proof : even if I banned any security app from GOTD, I discovered there Returnil… which is an absolute must-have. (If I can find another promo for it when the 1 year license is over, I’ll surely buy one…)
    You see ?

So… let’s see your find of the day !!!

Security is an area where many users’ mind is confused. Security against many xxxwares like spywares, malwares, adwares etc, viruses, trojans, additionally sandboxing, firewalls, virtualization etc, and it goes on. I have Avira Free and happy with that as anti-virus solution. But the Premium version with 1-year license would be better indeed. For virtualization, virtualbox is my favorite but it is already free. Maybe VMware Workstation would be nice but it cannot be called a security application on its own. Your comment ‘his software developer is among the serious ones … And it has one or two innovations - their own technology’ reminds me Comodo but their IS package is already free. Result? I am a little bit puzzled but keenly interested in this hot find!

Must be Panda! Panda recently brought out Beta2 of its cloud detection IS, and they may well try to promote it by giving out the current one for free

I don’t mind the wait. I’ll just run a backup with Titan Backup before I open up AShampoo Office to get a little work done. After that, I’ll entertain myself for a while with Concept Draw. : )

    Hi !
Now you can think at changing Titan with East-Tec Backup 2009.:-)

    Hi Imran!
Thanks for all those details . Really interesting but not our problem.
There is not proof that the revealed code is normally public. I strongly doubt it.
Anyaway, not our problem, as said.
