Norman Antivirus & Antispyware ( worth $49.95 ) - 4 Free ( Outdated )

Hi friends!

We hope you’ve had a great weekend. As for us - the entire 4 Free Team PLUS families - we’ve just started our summer vacation in a great Mediterraneean cruise.
So expect yourself at longer comments moderations ( than usual ) and maybe more brief articles ( again - than usual ) !

But don’t worry, we got everything we need for work and we take this opportunity - when we’re all 4 of us together -  to finalize all aspects of the 4 Free Project and to insist in our bargains with different software developers.

Like always we take the opportunity to thank to :
- all active friends who understand how important it is to talk about the softwares we find in promotions;
- all 4 Free readers, in general. Their interest in our site and community honours us.
- other site’s owners who are honestly giving credit to our community work ( when this is the case )

So the free promotion for Norman Antivirus & Antispyware was our plan B. We know Franck will ask us what was the plan A so here’s the answer: you’ll see it as a first A/V exclusive promotion.

Note that Norman - a very serious Norwegian company - is celebrating his 25th anniversary this year.

If we’re not wrong, Norman is more popular for the Parental Control software - part as their Security Suite ( together with the A/V & A/S plus the Personal Firewal ). See the table of compairaison HERE

Never extremely popular, Norman’s security products have rather positive reviews.

Norman’s antivirus and antispyware protect you against Internet threats such as viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits and spyware. This user-friendly and fast-performing security program is designed to give the highest possible security against malicious software (malware). The Norman SandBox technology is included - a proactive technology used to find and stop unwanted actions from new and unknown malware.

.

.

Here are the key features , according to Norman.com:

*  Complete antivirus and antispyware for your computer
* Protects you against virus, spyware, trojans and malware continuously
* Low memory usage and CPU load for improved performance
* Your email is scanned for virus before sending to your contacts
* Stay secure with proactive protection

.

How it works:
* Virus protection recognizes, blocks, and removes viruses, worms, trojans and other varieties of destructive program code
* Spyware protection protects against malicious spyware as keyloggers, hijackers, rootkits and other malicious software jeopardizing your privacy, identity or simply reducing computer performance
* Rootkit protection provides enhanced protection, detecting and removing rootkits
* Live Statistics gives you an overview over files scanned and number of infections found.
* Proactive malware protection uses Norman SandBox technology to keep your personal data free from new unknown viruses, trojans, worms and other malicious programs.
* Protects email, instant messaging (IM), Internet downloads and web browsing
* Auto-update of all security modules runs silently in the background.
* Protective screensaver scans your computer for viruses and spyware when the screensaver is active.
* Instant file and folder scan lets you quickly and efficiently scan for malicious content by right clicking a file or folder.

.

System requirements:

* Windows Vista Home Basic/ Home Premium/Business/Ultimate **
* Windows XP with Service Pack 2 Home/XP Pro/XP Media Center Edition
* Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4
* 450MHz or higher Pentium processor
* 256 MB of RAM
* 100 MB of available hard disk space

How to grabb for free a 1 year single user license for Norman Antivirus & Antispyware ?

Well … This is the strangest and easiest way of finding a free promotion we have ever experienced. :-)

Our friend WKS told us about this Forum post where the promotion owner himself is graciously giving away the registration details. The promotion is normally expired but we have checked it and it still works.

.

.

1. Using the OEM code from that post go and register here:

http://www.norman.com/Support/auth

( copy and paste in your browser )

2. Get your license key from the email sent by Norman.

3. Choose the language and the 32 bits or 64 bits Windows version and download the trial version for Norman Antivirus & Antispyware here.

http://www.norman.com/downloads/home/58628/en-us

( copy and paste in your browser )

4. You will notice that the installer is a general one - for the Norman Security Suite ( at least this happened to us )…  BUT when installing / registering you should only select the A / V module since this is the only one covered by your key.

That’s it!

Hope it’s useful! Thanks WKS !

No doubt, now a days Norman is not famous but in 90s when Norton was just taking first breath, Norman was most popular in the world. In fact, Norman were the first to show personal security software for PC. There were others, too, but Norman spoke louder and came ahead. No speech, just few words.

I think I will pass on this one - running 3 already with no problems (AVG, A2, SUperAntiSpyware)

Hopefully will be good for some - just not the one on my list :(

Hi guys … well, I think that Norman not being known in Brazil is not that bad, even after 25 years. I’m sure that many Norwegians also don’t know a dime about Brazil, so we’re even!!! Got the KEY without any problem. Thanks again! And, by the way, have a great vacation. You deserve it, once, according to several of your answers you NEVER SLEEP!!!!! he he he !

    Hi Guys
Thanks for a wonderful HF.Norman has been around for years and his products are generally good.I grabbed this for my mums computer, which had AVG free on it.DL and registration was the quickest and the easiest of all the HF’s I have encountered.
It is less of a resource hog than AVG Free and its simple looking GUI reminds me a little of the older versions of Nod32.Scanning time is similar to most AV’s on the market though I can’t test its effectiveness of detection, well not on my mum’s machine.
Manuals are found in the support center along with some interesting support tools.
I know the AV market is competitive but if you are looking for an effective AV without the eyecandy I would consider at least trying this over the free versions even if it is only for one year.
However,I will be sticking to Eset on my machine.

Thank you thank you thank you :-)

Like many others I use the free Avira Personal Edition. However experience has shown me that it’s good to “rotate” AV installations every so often, and since I’ve been using Avira for over a year now, this seems like an excellent time to change!

    1 point
    Hi !
    Are you sure?
You would be the first to change Avira for Norman.
I’m sure Norman is not a disaster, but I know Avira is one of the best ( if not the best ).
I wish you good luck, anyway!

Enjoy the vacation. Never heard of Norman so Avast 4.8.1335 will work for me as it has for 3 years now and it’s FREE

    1 point
Avast is good but not perfect.
A bit too heavy on resources and not so effective.
There is our Fav security french guru who tested and compared Avira, AVG and AVAST … but it was one year ago:
    http://forum.malekal.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=11659&p=89934#p89934
If you can’t understand french ( or translate online ) I can tell you that Avast was far behind Avira and AVG.
But if you have a proper way of surfing the web and using your PC in general, it’s true that Avast is good enough.
    Cheers!

As expected I will pass this one. Although you said its not for the
Famous 3, i thought of getting it (guessed myself of another
one). I think i am OK with ESET. To me if ESET doesn’t stop
a virus, i will use Kaspersky to remove it and once again
install ESET. (This method so far worked for me !!) :-)
For those who don’t know about the performance of various
AV products, have a look at this.
    http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/index.html

    2 points
    Hi Mayur!
So you uninstall and reinstall ESET ?
You must like it very much !
But how can you manage to grab a virus when you can :
    1. always create a Restauration Point, before downloading and installing anything. If problem occurs you simply restore the system.
    2. scan any file ( max 10 Mo ) with Virus Total
    http://for-free-on-internet.com/2008/08/security-series-1-virus-total-online-scanner/
    3. surf the web by using Sandboxie ( a sanboxed browser )
    http://for-free-on-internet.com/2008/10/sandboxie-safer-web-browsing/
    4. … or you can virtualize your entire drive C with Returnil or Virtual Box ( when you try softwares before deciding to install them )
    http://for-free-on-internet.com/2008/10/returnil-%E2%80%93-the-dreamed-protection/
    5. install any software with Altiris SVS in exportable virtual layers, activate or deactivate them whenever you want
    http://for-free-on-internet.com/2008/10/altiris-svs-%E2%80%93-no-more-dll-and-registry-hell-2/
Since I’ve been using these solutions I’ve never had virus or ad/malware problems the last 3 years .

With ESET and Kasperrsky I’m sure you have a good detection / removal.
But you can simply close the door to any possible virus with the above mentioned steps.
I have just used the opportunity to develop a subject I like. I hope you won’t mind Mayur.
    Thank you!

    Thanks for the HF Guys.
I am passing on this one , as I think the majority will.
When it comes to AV’s , you really want the best you can get…
Avira and Avast free versions score much better than this one.
I certainly wouldnt use a middle of the road AV just because of a years free license.
A lot of nasties can happen in a year.
Sorry Norman…but this is my honest opinion

    2 points
    Hi!
A normal reaction. The A/V choice is strange sometimes.
I know fans of FProt or Avast, softwares which are, in theory, less effective than Norman.

About Norman I would be interested to know more about the Sandbox technology.
Is it a virtual sandbox ? Is it useful in the AV detection ? I mean is this principle effective ?

Thanks, but the recent test results on Norman have not been so good for a while now, like last 2 years if I am not mistaken. :(. They used to be one of the top names in A/V software, not sure when they dropped the ball. I may give it a shot on a VM if I get time though, so went ahead and grabbed a key. But thanks again for all your hard work! Sorry I have not been posting as much but have been a bit under the weather.

Great Offer , Thanks for the licences. Currently , I’m still having the Avira premium for 2 months . Will both of them crash my pc together ? I’m still hoping to get avira 6 month license . I try the raymond freebies , but fail to get it . Gezz…

    1 point
It’s not advisible to install two A/V’s on the same PC.
Use Avira free, and have a proper use of your PC and you can never get a virus.

If my comment is gonna help you, then i don’t mind !
    (moreover the comment becomes meaningful).
Well it doesn’t mean that i uninstall and reinstall
once or twice a month. In years i have done it
twice or thrice. I know i am using a bad method, and
i know it will not work every time. Yes at times it havent
worked. If it flopped, simple i just use my ghost(image)
to my rescue. Offcourse i create a restoration point,
do an online scan and use virus removal tool too.
I know about sandbox/virtual box and i must confess
i haven’t used them. And i don’t know about SVS.
Well at the max my ESET and SpySweeper catches
all those malwares/viruses, at least for my way of
    browsing/surfing.

Yes what you have said is the professional way
of working. But sometimes those bad methods too
help. Yes i really like it. If my ESET fails, i would
love to see Kaspersky catch those viruses/
malwares. Its something childish. its not like i
    am ignorant.

    Hope i become a professional soon !!

Well actually all those big malwares doesn’t give
me headache. Simple Autorun virus is irritating
me. My Mp3 (USB) player have various forms
of Autorun viruses. I keep on deleting it, but it
comes back every time i insert it again. Hope i
get a solution from 4 free team or someone
    here.

    2 points
I apologize because I use your comment to talk about other security related stuff.
For Autorun have you tried ikill ?

For me Norman has a good sounding name among the antivirus solutions. Actually I don´t need this one, because I´m using the german Antivir Personal in conjunction with Zone Alarm Free Firewall for years now, and I´m really satisfied with this combination - I can recommend it to anyone!
Be aware, that the worst and deadliest thing one can do is surfing and installing downloaded programs without Antivirus and Software Firewall! Statistics show that worldwide there are to many PCs infected!

The registration worked well with only name and email.
The obtained key worked well with the “Download installer for Norman Antivirus & Antispyware” which I downloaded.
There are versions for 32bit and 64bit in different languages available: http://www.norman.com/downloads/home/58628

Thank you for sharing your experiences and keep up the good work!

    2 points
    Hi Sibi!
Avira + Zone Alarm is a good solution. You would be surprised to find out that advanced computer users ( not me! ) don’t actually need A/V software. Their behaviour is enough to prevent infections.

Statistics show that worldwide there are to many PCs infected!

This is not hot news. :-)

About the version to download and languages we’ve already said in the article :

    3. Choose the language and the 32 bits or 64 bits Windows version and download

I think I’ll stay with avast! (and spybot and Malwarebyte’s ) though (avast home edition has lots of options, built in spyware and rootkits protection) I also tried avg and avira. Avg is too system heavy and irritating for me and avira is just plain annoying to use. And norman has the worst detection method (according to av-comparatives).

    Hi guys…
I grab the key but I’m not sure am I going to use it or… maybe I’ll give it to my brothers PC ! Don’t get me wrong but AV issues is sometimes too sensitives for ones who ever got invected by a virus(es). IMHO AV should meet at least three of the five conditions below:
    1. Easy of use
    2. Not so heavy
    3. Have a good protection (I’m not saying excellent)
    4. Not so expensive (one have to pay for it every year per PC). Most of the user do not know how to obtain the free promotion.
    5. Have an unquestionable reputation (NEVER goes down)
I’m totally agree with your answer to fensie:
“have a proper use of your PC and you can never get a virus”
I have Avast and Comodo both are free and they have full fill my need for being secured !
So… Nice find guys and keep on telling me the good news like you always did :)

I believe it is possible to use 2 AV’s on the same machine as long as only one of them has the ‘active’ scanner enabled. The other can be used as an on demand scanner.Just make sure when installing you disable the active scanner on one of them.
The sandbox tech is virtual. Here is the link to Normans website giving a full explanation.
    http://www.norman.com/technology/norman_sandbox/en-uk
I know there are better,AV’s out there with better detection rates etc.. but as a freebie,I have been impressed so far with its operation on my mum’s Vista.

If it’s effective for real - the Norman’s Sandbox principle is not bad at all.

First of all, I want to say thanks for this freebie…although I doubt I would be using it..

As far as I know, Norman used to be a great security software especially when it first came out into the market…perhaps even better than Norton (some people say so). However, as time passes by and more companies come into the picture, I believe it is alright for me to say that Norman has “lost its touch”…and other security software became more popular/better (for e.g Norton, McAfee)

But it doesn’t stop there…even these big names (Norton and Mcafee) had their own falls and glitches…they become ’slower’ and ‘bloated’…To add to this, detection rates fall and people began searching for alternatives…

And they found better ones such as Kaspersky and Eset which proves to have better detection rates etc..But then there are some (or should I say most) of us who do not want to pay for our antivirus and hence, this is where free antivirus software such as Avira, AVG, and Avast comes into our rescue…

Problem is in deciding which to use…and I can say that there is no one perfect answer to this. However, today I want to share my experience of using all three (Avira, AVG, and Avast) on my PC.

I began with AVG and I found it to be ‘not bad’. However, time proved me wrong and I found out that AVG’s protection wasn’t really good and updating had always been a problem for me…and so…

I tried Avira and to my honest surprise, Avira proved to be a wonderful antivirus software..it wasn’t bloated and detection rates were good about 98% (I have read this somewhere on the internet)…The only problem was the ‘nag screen/advertisements’ that came along with it…(However, I managed to find a way to disable these with the help of Google) Another thing that I should point out is that Avira free V8 did not include antispyware feature unlike AVG or Avast but then V9 came out and antispyware feature were included (and for free)

I was more than satisfied with Avira but at the same time, curious about Avast. I decided to give it a shot and I installed Avast on my PC (after removing Avira of course). My experience? Avast was good (almost as good as Avira) but I found out that it was a bit ‘heavier’ on system resources just like AVG and that its detection rates were not as good as Avira.

Hence, I removed Avast and re-installed Avira. Up till today, I insist that Avira is the best among all the free antivirus software…in fact, tests had been conducted by others and it is found that Avira free is even better than some other commercial alternatives…

Well, I guess I have been ‘off-topic’ but hey, I just want to share my experience…

and yes, I just want to say this to John C, “rotating” AV installations every so often MIGHT be good but I doubt it is a wise choice to replace Avira for Norman…

and to fensie (and the 4freeteam), honestly it is INDEED not advisable to install more than 1 antivirus software on your system. Most techies would agree that if you do so, you must make sure that only 1 has real-time protection on while the other is used as a backup on-demand scanner…However, although this is the conventional and safest thing to do, I just want to inform all of you that it is actually POSSIBLE to install more than 1 antivirus software all with real-time protection on, as long as you know that the combination is not going to result in incompatibilties and crashes…I know coz I have done this before..

Let me share with you my own experience…

Avira Free and AVG Pro works well together
However, Avira Pro and AVG Free does not work well together
Avira Free and McAfee works well together
Avira Free and BitDefender Free Edition works well together
Avira Free, AVG Pro, McAfee, and BitDefender Free Edition works well together

I have tried many other combinations but I can’t remember all. These are some combinations that I remember….But let me tell you that I am not encouraging you to do this…doing this comes with BIG RISK..

Back to Norman, I guess I will just give away the free license keys to my friends. It might be of some use for them..Thnx 4FreeTeam

Well, I just tried but unfortunately, now it returns:
You have submitted an unknown OEM Code or no code at all. Be careful to fill in the correct code. I guess it was a really limited offer.

When we call them HFs and notify you by email … You grabb the license key first and then see if you need it or not.

Nice find gents … don’t know much about Norman but have been tempted to try them out before, and will probably do so now … but only on a Windows 7 RC partition that I’m using to test things, and not on any of my primary installations … if this is compatible with Vista, it should be able to run on Win7 in one form or another … thanks again for your efforts.

    Hi Mike!
I hope you have grabbed a license key because they’ve stopped the promo.

    Hi guys,

I’m afraid I’m going to have to say “Thanks, but no thanks.”. However, my reason is different from those above and I think is is important that people take notice of this.

I’m fortunate to have a progressive ISP that believes it is in their own best interests to provide a full internet security package. In prior years they provided Norton Internet Security and this year they provide a rebranded package from Kaspersky and the best part is that they have provided these packages free of charge. I suspect that many people have never thought to check and see what benefits their ISP’s provide. It just might be that other ISP’s do the same thing as Rogers Cable.

In summary, people should see if their ISP’s provide security packages at reduced or no cost. Take care and have a good day.

    Hi !

I wouldn’t ask the name, just the particularity in the process that made you ask before publish…

I would also ask you : you found a promo for the last version of the product X ; because you asked and weren’t granted the publication authorization, we will have a 4 free special for the last version of the product X. Great, but… what is the benefit of a 4 free special if it’s the same as what can be found elsewhere ?

3 of you are working as editors here. I would also ask why you don’t identify yourself in your answers. If you don’t want to disclose your names, at least A, B, C… so we know who we are talking to.
Currently its a little bit we were talking to one person whereas you’re actually free… (oups, three ! 4-3-on-internet… interesting !)

Take care of yourselves and enjoy your cruise. I did one once on the Mediterranean sea and it was wonderful !

    Hi Franck!

what is the benefit of a 4 free special if it’s the same as what can be found elsewhere ?

No, it cannot be found elswhere. It’s very dedicated, impossible to find it. That’s why we have prefered to ask permission.

The actual dialogs with the Editor will ( sadly ? ) dissapear on the new script. So it’s not important to disclose names or initials. We’re a monolith, anyway! :-)
( also please accept the way we have decided to present ourselves as a team )

This is our 5th Mediterranean cruise ( and we’ll keep counting for sure )!
    Best regards Franck!

I could not grab the givevaway Norman antivirus software because OEM code was no more accepted when I tried it. Anyway I wondered if it was legal to use an OEM code to obtain the software instead of a final-user licence : can I have your opinion ? I ‘d like to suggest to other guys that missed this giveaway that the new Kingsoft Security Suite is now offered free for six months on the Kingsoft home page ( http://www.kingsoftresearch.com ) and I remember that Norman and Kingsoft Antivirus scored equal in the AV-Comparative authorative tests ( http://www.av-comparative.org ). Regards!

    Hi !
Like we always say: if the promotions are limited ( for computer magazine’s readers - in general ) we publish them AFTER when they should be already expired.
    Never when officialy active.
If the owner keeps public the registration page AND supply himself the installer AND accepts your registration ( a few month after the expiry date ! ) … AND - in this case - the magazine reveals the OEM code on his public forum …
… I will let you draw the conclusion.
    Thanks for the others infos!
    Regards!
