Windows 7 - How To Get It 4 Free ( US only ) ( Not the HF 30 )

This info is rather popular on the web but, if Franck thinks it’s important … We publish it ! :-)

Just joking of course. Take into consideration that + 50 % of our visitors come from USA … So this news can easily be classified as “important for 4Freers”  !

The opportunities to get for free any OS from M$oft are very rare so here’s how any US citizen ( or visitor at the right moment ? ) can get a free copy of the latest Windows 7.

.

Note that the offer is actually intended for IT Proffesionals or for Developers. ( see screenshot )

.

All you need to do is head over to The New Efficiency event page and register yourself for the event. The event date is different for different locations. So, hurry up and register now.

    Windows 7 Professional: €319,99

    Windows 7 Ultimate: €334,99) OMG…!!!

    Hi Billy!
To be honest 4Free is to small for the moment ( to get that kind of promotions )
Today we’re celebrating one year of activity.
Let’s hope we’ll be important enough next year - on August 16th 2010 … In order to have important promotions like the one you’re mentioning.
    Regards!

Too bad it isn’t available in Canada, but I did try Windows 7 RC and it worked great on my desktop, despite not having Aero (I probably wouldn’t need it anyway).

Ah well, there might be an opportunity later for Canadians since we are next to the border.

Thanks 4Free for posting this announcement. I have signed up for the Houston event. There was no upfront fee and no mention of fees to be imposed in the future or at the event. The closing window announced much more upcoming information and material; we’ll see what that brings. If there are no fees for the event, I may be able to attend (the cost of travel and accommodations will be difficult enough) and give a better report.

There is a sign up process. You will have to create an account on the Microsoft event registration system and register for one of the Windows7 or Server2008 sessions. The required information was not too intrusive. I did not have to give a phone number or street address; but did have to give an email address. Here is the information requested (*=required):
    *Name
    Badge Name
    Job Title
    *Company
    Address
    *City *State *Zip code
    *Email
    Phone
    Mobile
    Accessibility Needs
    MS Opt In Email
    Partner Opt In
Do you require a sign language interpreter
    *Are you a Government Employee?
*Are you currently a user of Windows 7?
    *What is your primary role?
*Number of Computers in your organization
*AM Developer Track you will attend [AM Developer Windows 7 Track-my choice]
*PM IT Pro Track you will attend [PM IT Pro Windows 7 Track-my choice]
*Username [to create event registration account]
*Password [to create event registration account]

I will followup with posts on how this turns out.

    Windows 7 followup 1:
    I have received registration confirmation:
“This message confirms your attendance at the The New Efficiency: IT Professional and Developer Technical Briefings Houston. Please print this e-mail and bring it with you to the event as confirmation of your registration. You will not receive a confirmation number. …”
It includes a link to update your reservation; the program schedule selected; time and place; address and map links; and the notice that
“Please note that you must bring photo identification to check-in to this event.”
No promise to supply Windows 7 yet!

    3 points
    I think it’s rather normal.
But they say in a very clear way on the

“Attend the free event, take home Windows 7 … And at our free live events, you can learn, network, and get your copy of Windows 7!…
Terms and Conditions ( bottom of the page )
    * Offer good only in the 50 United States (includes D. of C.) to attendees of the Microsoft New Efficiency Launch. Limit one gift per person”

So you shouldn’t worry, imho .

Thanks for the info! I’m a .NET developer now registered to attend the event in my area on Sept. 24th (and of course pick up my free Win 7 OS ). I probably would not have heard about this if it weren’t for Franck and the kind folks at 4Free.

To answer steve’s question, there is no fee to attend. Not only that, they’re providing FREE continental breakfast for those who like food 4 free. :D

    Hi Gor!

  21. Franck
    18 August, 2009

Gor, I think you can.I’m not an IT professional nor a developer, just a “tech enthusiastic” as Microsoft states in its own event subscription forms… at least in France.

It has been for 2 years now that I register for what they call the TechDays. This year, although I subscribed, I didn’t go, because I had too much work to do, but…

I registered with no difficulty for this big 3 days IT event. Everything was free, even the morning coffee with croissants, and the lunch bag (a sandwich, a soft drink can, a fruit and a cake if I well remember). No windows distribution that time, but, hey… there was no new windows to be released then… (actually there was windows 2008 server, but that’s a different market!)

It’s just my two pennies, but… Just think a minute about what is at stakes for Microsoft. The new emerging market is the about 300$ netbooks one. In this market, there was no place for Vista, which requires too much system ressources. So Microsoft was quite happy I guess to sell more XP licences. Hopefully for them the basic middleage housewife (sorry for the cliché) who wants to buy a computer is affraid with Linux and is much more eager to buy a windows-OSed netbook. So OK.

Now, seven is supposed to be optimized for low configuration like netbooks. And the crisis is still going on : so cheep (!!!) Linux may become better than steep Windows… By the way, I read a week ago on a French blog that there was a Hannah Montana Ubuntu release… Linux for pussies, you see what that means for Microsoft if even female teenagers get to use Linux?
And, anyway, obviously Microsoft can’t keep on selling XP forever. So Microsoft must deal with the transition from XP to Seven, especially on this huge emerging market.

Remember : Vista sucks. Who said that?
Anyway, would our basic middleage housewife think otherwise? No, everybody knows vista sucks because many tech enthusiastics, geeks and nerds said so…
I don’t say IT pro nor developer. Why? Do you really think they can make the opinion? No, because they are all quite the same : young engineers specialized in computering, blabla…
A “tech enthusiastic” can be anybody : an artist, a lawyer, a teacher, a med… Anyone! Just look at the audience of this site, of Raymond’s or Gizmo’s… You’ll understand what I mean…

Now consider these big events all over the States. Microsoft will spend a lot of money for that but… in return, they’ll get assemblies of IT pros and developers and “tech enthusiastics” listening for 2 or 3 hours how Seven is incredibly good!
2 or 3 hours of a nice argumentation on this windows qualities delivered to a very well targeted audience…
And you know the best: all these “tech enthusiastics” will bring home their free copy of win7. You see?
Artists, lawyers, teachers, meds… anything… They have received a special argumentation on Win7, they had the unique privilege to get a free licence as a gift from Microsoft… What will they say when they’re back in their real life? That seven sucks? I doubt.

IT Pros and developers real life is in front of their computers. Tech enthusiastics real life is everywhere. And everywhere, these tech savvy persons will repeat what they have heard at the Microsoft event and what they experienced with their FREE copy : Seven is wonderful…
And what will do our basic middleage housewife wanting to buy her netbook? She will want one with Seven, because it’s really the best OS ever!

As for outside the US… I’m sure the 2010 French TechDays will be dedicated to Win7. The registration to the event will surely be free, as will be the coffee and sandwiches.
I wouldn’t bet they will offer win7 licences outside the US anyway. Indeed, it’s enough to convince the US market to get the world market, especially in the IT world.
“As US goes, so goes the world” :)

    Hi Franck !
Thank you for your two … eurocents .
Imho the powerfull marketing from M$oft has two opposite aspects:
    - the negative one: we’re all monitored by trhe US “Big Brother”
    - the positive one : Bill Gates organization brought a certain order and rythm to the cybernetic world … And all the others had to follow that .
Let’s hope the announced Google OS will be “THE” most effective step in the decrease of M$oft’s world domination.
To Franck and all other REAL 4 Free friends like Franck, please read the next announcement ( news ) article.
We’re ready to do the last step - BUT MOST IMPORTANT ONE - before launching our real project.

well, :( the closest event to me was already booked by the time I went to register.
I still have the Win95 Tech Eval CD, which I used to install/upgrade through Win98 with it’s key, until I broke down and migrated to XP. I’ll have to get a new machine for & or whichever OS (maybe the Hannah Montana one! :) ) in order to have the processing/memory power (and who said we’d never need more than 640K!)
Looking forward to the next 4 Free step!

The package contains a DVD for 32bit only.
So you’ll have to secure a 64bit DVD yourself or wait for them to announce an “alternate media” ordering option.

One other note about the media.
In the US you get a DVD pack with 32bit only, but in the UK they are apparently giving out a DVD [ack with 32bit and 64bit DVDs! Both giveaways are for Win7 Ultimate.
US participants will need to get a 64bit DVD from other means and the UK participants do not need to. :-)
