.

Hi friends!

We have all appreciated the quality of Ashampoo Office 2008 - a rebrand of the acclaimed SoftMaker Office - as a free ( for us :-) ) alternative to the expensive Microsoft Office. ( though we’ll soon be able to use the online Office for free - with Microsoft Office Web Apps )

… or Ashampoo Music Studio 2009, or Ashampoo Photo Optimizer or Photo Commander, or WinOptimizer 5 , or ALL Ashampoo Promotions !

… But there is no doubt Ashampoo Burning Studio is the most acclaimed software in the Ashampoo portfolio. Mainly because it’s a cheaper, more compact, faster and very stable alternative to Nero

( BTW ! We hope you have all read Alok’s comment about the Nero’s bugs. Thank you Alok ! )

So after Ashampoo Burning Studio 2008/2009 and V 2009 ( VNUnet), the 4 Free Community MUST “keep the pace” and … Grab Ashampoo Burning Studio 2010 ( Latest V9.10 ) - 4 Free !

Of course it’s Mayur’s hand - finding this promotion ! That’s why you find it in Mayur & 4 free Corner ! :-)

.

We practically get the latest version - Ashampoo Burning Studio 9.10 ( worth $ 49,99 )

Ashampoo Burning Studio 9 is a major update that improves almost every aspect of the program, adding many new features and capabilities in every part of the program. It also introduces LightScribe burner support (from version 9.10) and a new Movie Editor for editing and combining your videos before burning them to DVD. The Movie Editor has functions for cutting, transitions, fades, subtitles, titles and more, plus a point-and-click DVD menu editor with animated themes for creating great-looking interfaces for your DVD movies.

The new version also packed with improvements, new features and fine tuning that make all Burning Studio’s functions more powerful and even easier to use.

This is how the V9 GUI looks :

.

.

At a first look we do not get the “most important”new feature : the Movie Editor ( and Player ) . We’re sure all 4 Freers are smiling, when thinking we’ve grabbed Cyberlink PowerDirector 7 Ultra or Magix Movie Edit Pro 15 Silver.

We understand very well Ashampoo Burning Studio 9.10 is a good all-in-one media and burning solution, but this does not mean we’re not free to use better video or photo tools we have installed on our computers.

The same for the other feature it seems we do not get in V 2010 - the Slideshow Editor.

The great news ( we DO get ) is the LightScribe burner support.

Franck’s review

I/ Let’s speak the truth… When I saw an Ashampoo product as a “very hot” HF, I was really disappointed.
But seeing the good reviews of the community and the team enthusiasm, I decided to give it a try.

Before I go any further in my comment, I must say that I still use a very old version of Nero. Nero 6 (this version was once called “reloaded” if I well remember!) which I paid for.
It’s very old, not even Vista capable.

If you ask me, it’s a good program coming with a lot of useless (or let’s say “unwanted”) modules, like Nero Recode, MediaHome, ShowTime… So many apps I never used. I must admit I don’t even know what they’re supposed to do !

I never upgraded for two major reasons.
The product is clearly over-priced. That’s first.
The editor explains this steep price by the variety of the aforementioned tools that come bundled with Nero. Sure but that’s the problem with Nero.

Basically I only use Nero Burning Rom, which I still find excellent.
I also use from time to time NeroVisionExpress which is convenient (basic DVD authoring) and CoverDesigner, which I find very basic though.
Note that I use very old versions, so…
Anyway, I didn’t want to pay so much for such a too big machinery…

Although I’m perfectly happy with Nero 6, I don’t like at all what Nero is from now on…

II/ So I decided to give Ashampp v9.12 a try.
I must say it’s a very good surprise, and I better understand your enthusiasm.

It seems to be a very complete solution, which can perform everything one can need when it comes to burning DVD. Its footprint on system resources is really moderate, and it loads as fast as my old Nero 6.

The GUI is well done and eye-candy.
It’s one of my biggests surprise there. Usually Ashampoo product interface is largely filled with their news channel crap. These channels make the app look very unprofessional. I don’t like apps calling home for something else than update checking.
Nothing of that kind here. The channels are easily deactivated during the installation process. Afterward, they are very discrete. So that’s a good point.

So far, so good and I’m happy I grabbed it.

III/ Two drawbacks anyway (maybe more later, after more usage, I don’t know… but I don’t think).
- one minor one : no nrg file support when it comes to burning disc image files… (I need to convert nrg to iso before I can burn… Sad…)
- one major drawback : I totally Sudip above comment when he deplores that the lack of explorer panes to select the files to burn. Burning files and folder should be the most sophisticated part of the app as I guess it will be the most common usage of it. Tha lack of drag and drop makes the process of filling the disc very unconvenient.
This perfectly illustrates the limit of the assistant logic. Offering assistants to users is a great think, but the user must be offered a way of using the app without following a step by step process, clicking “next” between each…
For this sole reason, I’ll stick to my Nero 6

IV/ Obviously, when I move to a newer windows, I’ll need to drop my Nero 6. As I won’t pay for a Nero upgrade, I’ll use this one instead.
Anyway, I hope Ashampoo will quickly improve burning studio to solve this major drawback. I really want to do the switch…
So Ashampoo guys, you know what to do…

Hooray! Two separate versions! I love Ashampoo Burning Studio. However the only missing functionality missing in the free editions is that you cannot directly burn a video DVD from a video file like an AVI file. I will check the full version whether it has this functinality. Thank you Hakan, Mayur, Glassmann and 4Free Team!

Thanks 4Free team. Good to see the community working together on this. I wish I had something to give back. But the times I’ve been ready to do this (X1 Desktop Search Professional, Finale Notepad), the publisher has either asked me to refrain or removed the link. Some day…

    Nice one :)
Did the bad mistake of buying the (buggy) WinOnCD 2009 luckily for only 10 Euros a while ago and so i am very happy to replace it with this Software as i never had Problems with the Free Version of the Burning Studio before.
It also works fine on Windows 7 x64 RTM.

Of course guys.. it’s the least i can do to help the community..
i received the serial nrs in my uni email today..
when i go home i will install it and tell you all about it..
I had the v8 of the program and i liked it better than my paid Nero..
I may be one of the “unlucky” privileged ones this time since i have a serial number but with the work you do guys all the others that can’t have it the way i got it will enjoy a fine program (as long as ashampoo’s developer kept at least the same quality as v8 when they added some more cool features ).

Hello guys! tks VERY much for this v9.12!!! Installed perfectly! Now can uninstall previous version, the v9.00 Advanced.
One thing that I’ve immediately noticed different, is that one can add menus when DVD burning. This is a very good upgrade on the software, because when creating compilations of TV series or placing several Divx films on one DVD there was no such an easy way to do it.
DVDFlick (open source) can do that, but for some reason some people can’t make it work. Atta boys!!

OK, here are the results I have:

Ashampoo Burning Studio 9.12 supports directly burning a Video DVD from video files like AVI files. However Burning Studio 2010 does not have this functionality. For the moment, I will continue with 9.12 version. Thanks again for presenting two options.

    Hello, friends!
I’m grabbing this one. I already have the version 9.05, and I’m very happy with it. In my opinion, this software is much better then Nero, at least for three reasons:
1 - The Burning Studio, although obviously consume some RAM memory, allows us to use other programs, something almost impossible with Nero, which is much heavier in terms of processing.
2 - The installation and uninstallation is much faster and cleaner (just uninstall Nero and see how many entries it leaves in the Windows registry).
3 - When I was recording backup DVDs from movies that I have, with Nero, many times they not played on DVD players of different brands. But, on the other hand, the DVDs recorded with Burning Studio play on any equipment. In fact, I never found a DVD player that don’t play a DVD disc recorded with Burning Studio.
Therefore, I also recommend this program, which proved a pleasant surprise for me.
    Regards!
    Evandro - Brazil.

hi.. great find.. didnt have to think before downloading it.  installed and registered without any problems. but a pity it doesnt burn a AVI file directly.  by the way, the internet tab gives an option of upgrade to burning studio 9. so is this an older version? one would think that this one would be a more recent version. clarifications anyone???

Got the last version here and was very pleased with it.
As for Nero I never could get it to run without the BSOD.
I’ll load this on on my laptop it’s a good functioning piece of software easy to use and on top of that FREE and dependable.
I used Pinnacle in the past because it was always fully functional out of the box and easy to use but this one is equal in options but as I said FREE and free is better especially when it works well.

Hi! This came at just the right moment as I’d been having problems with Nero. After years of working faultlessly it suddenly started failing to burn DVDs, usually falling over with the disk around 70% complete. Thankfully Ashampoo had no such burning issue and completed a dvd movie in around 8 minutes. Initially however it seemed to have a problem with my dvd drive; although it recognized it, it was unable to proceed further. The answer lay in the settings menu > drives >enable extended drive enumeration. Once enabled, the burning problem went away.
As I am interested in photo/video slide shows I quickly looked at the 2 options of creating a movie and creating a slideshow. The first thing to say is that they cannot match the sophistication of PowerDirector Ultra 7 (many thanks 4Free). The movie maker allowed import of both images and video clips which is not always possible, but only basic transitions could be applied.
The end result would probably be competent but rather boring. For people wanting to make a basic photo only slide show however, the “create a slideshow” option is easy to use. Pretty much everything is automated and you can apply transitions and zooms at the click of a button and add music to produce a pretty reasonable slideshow very quickly.
The cover printer also seems to have undergone an improvement over an earlier version that I saw - lightscribe is a nice addition - so all in all it’s a big thumbs up.

First impression was ARRRGGGGHHH!!! Just in the morning I have downloaded the Studio 2009 Advanced after much deliberation over whether I really want to move away from CDBurnerXP. Then this!!! But glad that I really give it a go.
I am always been impressed by Ashampoo software and this in my opinion is their BEST!!! The interface and the color schemes are really good although I would like the standard Windows menu to be removed just like WinOptimizer 5.
The addition of photo and video features are a definite welcome but as you say we do have much better options (Ho, CyberLink!).
Standard burning features work like a charm. What hurts is the absence of an explorer pane while adding files which would have made the job much easier. Can’t really beat old school drag-n-drop.
The Cover Editor is very useful and the best I have ever used. As compared to CDBurnerXP it consumes a bit more memory and significantly greater amount of hard disk space. But given the features, it is a nice trade-off. This is a quality piece of software and highly recommended.

Lots of thanks and warm regards to Hakan, Glassman, Mayur & 4Free.

    Hi Doug !
    Sorry but I don’t agree.
It’s true there is always better but Ashampoo WinOptimizer, Office and even Music Studio are very appreciated … And a few others.
It seems the Ashampoo guys know what they’re doing when rebranding high quality softwares.
    Just my opinion. :-)

Some note about my experience: the registration may be on each one of two links above, is the same thing. The code obtained is only one (unless you change data… :-)
If you like the version 9.12 (as me), you can download it directly from the Ashampoo site; this is exactly the file linked by Glassman.
The version 9.12 is localized in 28 different languages and activates with the unic code obtained with the first registration.
The program seems very simple but have many interesting features (esay, not limited, they say on the site), but is not so “massive” as Nero. The last versions are really too big and invasive…

I also had a problem with it. When I choose “Burn or Rip Music” and then “Create an Audio CD” it crashed and it shut down.
In this case the problem was related to me choosing Norwegian as my language in the program (downloaded it from Ashampoos web site).
When I switched back to English again, it worked perfectly. I am not sure if this is in any way related to Joes problem, but I mention it in case any others run in to a similar problem.

Apart from that, the program is as rock solid as any other previous versions of this program I have used.

I/ Let’s speak the truth… When I saw an Ashampoo product as a “very hot” HF, I was really disappointed.
But seeing the good reviews of the community and the team enthusiasm, I decided to give it a try.

XXXX Read Franck’s review in the main article. Thank you!

    V/ two final words…

    - When announcing the HF, you stated “never pay again for a program”.
I’m OK with that, but I don’t understand… When a developer is offering free giveaways, doesn’t he hope nice feedbacks and sale increase ?
I don’t understand how developers could agree to negotiate 4free specials, if you start with telling them your goal is nobody ever buy a software again…

    - When announcing a HF you always have two options.
You said above you picked this one for “obvious” reasons. It’s no big deal, but I see nothing obvious. Did you really think the owner would close the promo?
Remember, you gave us some times ago the link to PlanetBeranger article explaining ashampoo business model… :)

Hi Franck and thank you for the interesting comment !
    1. Theoretically you’re right … But we do not intend to “act commercially” just to make them feel good. Our community is offering comprehensive feedback and ( mostly ) a powerful web buzz .
And for the moment no software developer has told us ” Yes but … ”
I personally appreciate more when someone is speaking his mind than someone treating the problem in a commercial way. Otherwise we should call 4 Free … GOTD (2)
But we’ll be more careful, you’re right . Thank you !
    2. It was obvious because Hakan ( in fact Murad ) had just published it. So we have chosen Mayur’s find and added Glassman’s ( Murad’s ) find .
Mayur and the team have worked for that article and it would have been a shame to loose “the HF effect” … Because it is a HF !
Hope you agree . Regards !

Tiger Singh, I bet you mismatched installers and serials. You surely used v2010 with serial for v9.12 (or the opposite).

Use v9.12 as it has more features (it’s my advice)
Use the code you got at http://www2.ashampoo.com/webcache/html/1/trial_step_1_5573_20_EUR.htm (see update 1)
    It should start by BRS9A2

if the serial starts by BS10A5, it is intended to v2010.

    Hope that helps!

Regarding Drag & Drop : I am able to use it from an explorer window to the Burning Studio Window without issues… Not sure then the double pane screen is that needed.
    (my 2 cents)

    2 points
    Interesting! Good to know .
    Thank you Glassman !

  90. Franck
    28 September, 2009

Maybe the double pane is not mandatory… but the drag n drop implementation is clearly too light unless someone explains me what I’m doing wrong.

Drag n drop from the explorer, OK. I didn’t try that, so thanks Glassman for the info…
But there is nothing such withing the burning studio itself. Imagine you add a file to your burning project. Then you create a new folder to your project… So far it’s a very common and legitimate operation… Imagine now you finally want to put this file in this folder.
Try drag the file and drop it above the folder…
If your ashampoo burning studio is the same than mine, nothing happened.
The only way I found to move a file from a different folder within the burning project is :
    - remove the file
    -browse to the wanted folder
    -add the file

I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think so… I for one hold that for a major drawback.

That said, as a nice addition to the program, I’d really like the two panes interface…

OK, I’m back after some more messing around with this soft…
There is another big flaw which didn’t strike me at first. It concerns, once again, the main function of a burning software : the confection of a burning project… Apart from the insufficient drag ‘n’ drop support, this program suffers of a total lack of control over the burning project settings (or let’s say I didn’t find where to do all this…)
I found an expert mode allowing to select some parameters like iso 9660, joliet…
OK. But where do is set if I want to burn mono or multisession? and which mode: disc-at-once, track-at-once…?
And where do I allow overburning ans specify its limits?
In a nutshell, it’s a very good program which is still very weak on its main functionnality: burning disc.
As I don’t plan to move to 7 now, mu Nero 6 works perfectly under XP ; as I don’t need neither lightscribe nor blue-ray… I keep Nero (6, ok…) over Ashampoo.
That said, I must be honest, I don’t need to overburn or change burning mode very often…

    @Glassman
Yes drag ‘n’ drop from explorer works but the ability to get that done from the software itself would have been better. Also as Franck rightly said you can’t create a new folder and drag ‘n’ drop something in it.
    @Franck
Yeah that’s right; apart from limited drag ‘n’ drop support the option for multisession is also missing (if we are not overlooking). It doesn’t even ask you before burning whether you want to multisession or close it. I have seen if you burn significantly lesser amount of data it automatically makes it multisession. (400-500 mb on a dvd+rw). Will check how far it can go.

Another glaring missing feature is the disk information (plus device information too). There’s no way to know until you start adding files what’s in your optical drive. CDBurner XP have all these plus some more.

Oh… just have a free upgrade to version 9.20. Nothing’s change from outside.

    Hello!
I tried to use the links for downloading and registering Ashampoo Burning Studio 2010 (v. 9.12) reported at the beginning of this article, but failed because:

    - the registering link doesn’t work (I inserted my e-mail address, but no confirmation mail was sent and after pressing the “send” button I was automatically moved to products area…);
    - the download link is for version 9.20 instead that 9.12.

Is there anything wrong in what I do? If not, how can I grab version 9.12?

Thanks and many compliments for your fantastic work!!!

    Some more revelations:-

    1. Installed BS Advanced 2009 (version 9.00) in a separate computer and played with it a bit. Unlike 9.12/9.20 this one has the options for Disk-At-Once and multisession although overburning support is still missing. Going through the help files suggest that this software does not support overburning.

    2. In case of 9.12/9.20 I have found that the CD’s are never closed (at least in case of data CD) and as Franck mentioned earlier no Disk-At-Once support which is really strange as the help file says that it do have these features. There’s no hint of overburning in the help file though.

    3. It seems like Ashampoo is differentiating between Advanced and Standard version. That’s the only conclusion I can come to after all this.

I just confirmed that the 9.12/9.20 registration process isn’t working (as Alberto noted).

Curiously, the 9.10 process is still working OK–I had no problem with the registration. The download site is another matter–I could never get it to give me a download link for 9.10. Fortunately, I found another site that works just fine:
