Our friend Jeff has kindly told us about the great news from the Office Web Apps team:
Today is an exciting day for us! We are making available Excel, Word and PowerPoint Web Apps for a select group of Windows Live users as part of the Office Web Apps Technical Preview. While the initial functionality is modest it will expand over time. As we get closer to the release of Office 2010 we will make the Office Web Apps available to more Windows Live users.
This early peek at the Office Web Apps will include high-fidelity viewing of Word, Excel and PowerPoint files in the browser. Invitees will also be able to edit Excel and PowerPoint files. Over time we’ll add OneNote Web App and the ability to edit Word files as well. Stay tuned to this blog to hear more about the upcoming features.
Thank you Jeff !

Intro ( and conclusion ) from the 4 Free Team
It’s easy with Franck ! He leaves a 4 lines comment and we all have a great article about hot news.
We all know Microsoft Office Suite is expensive but for different reasons we need it on our PCs ( for example Word after 2007 version, working with the “docx” files).
We have always told you All Softwares Can Be Grabbed ( and now Used ! ) 4Free, sooner or later, one way or another!
As a result of the powerful competition from Google Docs, Microsoft has announced approx 1 year ago their Office Online Project. And now it starts working in a beta stage ( not flawless - you’ll see below)
In the end we find very important the fact that one has the possibility to work online ( edit and save/download ) with Word, Excell, PowerPoint or One Note … In a generous SkyDrive 25 GB online storage space … All that 4 Free !
By publishing a separate article for Franck’s found news, we give another prove - that we DO appreciate the technical side of Microsoft/Windows - to Franck and to all our “opponents” in the very interesting debate on “Who’s selling his soul …”
Franck’s 4 line comment must be enough for everybody to understand this is important and how it works . Note that the service will normally get out of beta in “the first semester of 2010″.
This is what Franck has shared with all our readers. Please note the tip about how to make it work in your country language.
“Just a quick drop by for Microsoft Online Beta for everyone
Found at : Korben ( french site )Quick translation of the procedure
1/ Connect to Skydrive through your live account
2/ Switch your profile settings to English and United States (here and here)
3/ Upload a word file in your skydrive storage
4/ An invitation to beta test Office Web Apps should appear by now![]()
I didn’t try yet. If Korben readers are right, you can revert to your true language after accepting the invitation. Office Web Apps will still work ! (if they are right)
We have tried it, see the screenshots below.
The bad news is the online Word and OneNote doesn’t seem to work for the moment, but we’re sure they’ll be soon fully functional.
Enjoy !
Thank you Franck !

Hi Stammer !
I didn’t have to go to the French web site. I had signed up for an MSN live account previously & apparently that was all I needed.
My country & language (USA & English) were already set. I uploaded a recipe I had saved as a Word doc. and the invitation came up.
I accepted and played around a little while….but I haven’t located the uploaded recipe file yet!!!! i don’t know where it went!Managed to set up a new file to store later “experiments” .
Looks like this could save us room on our computers by not having to download the actual programs, altho I can see where it would be prudent in some cases to save a copy of a doc. on your own hard drive……just in case.
Thanks Franck & 4 Free Team for this fun find.

Have a great party !
I’ll stay with zoho (With a free account you get an email, an Online Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Presentation Tool, Note Taker, wiki, Online Organizer) and you can log-in with your google and/or your yahoo account. And it will probably work better in non-internet explorer browsers
(Microsoft usually sends ‘broken’ code to browsers, hotmail is the prefect example of that. See: http://windowslivehelp.com/community/p/120863/454858.aspx)

Thans to Korben and Franck!
I’ve activated Office online switching into the English/Usa from my original settings; yes, Word is not active for now (there is only a viewer for docx, doc, etc. files).
Then, I switched again to my native language, and Office now is (automatically) in my language!
This is only a beta version, but until it works… it’s fine!
Thank you 4Free!

Thanks for your feedback !
Google version works fine, but some features are just better coming from Microsoft, like for example, Excel has all the cool features that Google version is missing.

Yup ! It’s the original !

Humm.
Just signed up, but I did not get the invitation.
Is it still open — is anyone else new getting the invitation?
Just not quick enough?

Hi!
I can’t help you from Europe .
… But it may be a bit late.
Somebody else ?
I just tried - at last! - the procedure and got the invitation…
Sequoiah68, maybe your account is not set to English AND USA (you can revert to proper settings afterwards).
Maybe you forgot to send a proper file in your skydrive storage
Maybe you didn’t see the invitation link. It’s not very visible.
But, right now it’s working from France… (USA
- I think there is no geographic IP checking)
Stupid me !

I have not payed attention ( so many comments today ! ) and I thought he was talking about The W7 party !!!
Unforgivable !
Thanks Franck for taking care of your corner !
Hello,
I can now share (view for Word for now) documents with other people.
Thank you for the find!

Glads it’s useful, Marius !
You neglected to mention that people must have a registered copy of MS Office on their computer in order to create and upload an MS Word document to their SkyDrive account. If you haven’t already bought some version of office, you won’t be able to use this one.

Thanks for the infos

Hum… I seldom use OpenOffice, but if I’m not mistaken, you can save your work in an openXML format (docx, xlsx, pptx…)
So…
And Bill, even without MS office, don’t you have an MS office in your hard drive which you one received by email? Seriously…
To take profit of this offer, the only thing you need is a live account, which is free…
bonjour,
Une fois que vous avez fait tout ce qui est indiqué plus haut, vous pouvez repasser dans votre langue maternelle ! dans mon cas en français, on garde l’utilisation des logiciels qui se met eux aussi dans votre langue maternelle !
Merci !

The best proof the about how important the community is ! ( growing and working )
Well, I tried again today… Noticed I was trying to do this through Firefox on my Ubuntu system — oops. So I looged on to my Win XP and tried completely over through IE, but no dice. Just get a nice message: “You’re done! You successfully added 1 file. ”
Either I’m not lucky this time, or the limited number is filled.
Guess I didn’t need it anyway.

Strange !
There are so many friends confirming it works.
I shouldn’t ask this but is your XP “official” ?
It’s still possible to get an “invitation” as of today. It is, however, hardly worth bothering with. The Office Web Apps blog entry for 9/21, the day the Technical Preview was launched, shows the extremely limited functionality available now. It goes on to indicate that the addition of future features will be tied to the approach of the release of Office 2010:
Today is an exciting day for us! We are making available Excel, Word and PowerPoint Web Apps for a select group of Windows Live users as part of the Office Web Apps Technical Preview.
