Hi friends !

This time we have waited two days “in purpose”. Beside preparing the tools we have promised for this week ( in the Green revolution article ) we have worked on another important ( for us ) problem.

Since there were many friends claiming the HF notification was not really working … we have checked manually how the notification script was working and … We have found a disaster - in both “directions” !  ( the qualified friends have not been notified while some readers who did not deserve it … have been notified ) :-(

Sorry ! We hope this time we have solved the problem for real. If anybody has not been notified this time ( and he deserve it - active the last two weeks ) PLEASE tell us !

When we have 3 ( three ! ) alternatives for a “top notch” HF  … We find normal to favor ( publish first ) those coming from friends who are choosing to generously share them on 4 Free.

This is the case for the today’s tip about a great promotion, which comes from Fake91. Thank you friend !

So you can grab another great ACDSee software, after ACDSee for Pentax Users 2.0 … Of course unless you haven’t decide to stay with one of these photo-softwares, revealed in free promotions on 4 Free : Corel PaintShop Pro X , StudioLine Photo Classic 3 SE Portrait Professional 6, Xara XS, ArcSoft Software , Photo Pos Software , Magix Photo Software , Ashampoo Photo Optimizer 2 - Ashampoo Photo Commander 6 or AquaSoft Barbecue PRO PhotoFlash AND SlideShow for YouTube.

Although we have tried so many photo editors, please note that ACDSee Photo Editor 2008 is the most impressive for us - as average digital photo users. ( Nota bene ! ). Very fast and loaded with unbelievable tools !

ACDSee Photo Editor 2008 has all the tools, inspiration and clear instruction you need to turn your digital photos into truly captivating keepsakes. Create personalized greeting cards, scrapbook pages, invitations and more. With Photo Editor’s easy to use artistic text, layout and editing features, you’ll be amazed at what you can do with your photos.

ACDSee Photo Editor 2008 feature highlights
How-tos: Guided walk-throughs that teach you how to be creative with your photos. They walk you through different creative tasks you want to do with your photos, step by step, from start to finish.

Adjustments: Displays up to 8 different previews of your original photo, right on screen, each preview showing a different variation of the adjustment or effect you’re applying.

Image Basket: Displays thumbnails of any photos you’re working on, so you can see what you’ve got and get an idea of the work you’ve done.

Vignette Tool: Creates stunning portrait-style photos that can go into your family album, or used to make gift cards or pages in a family tree project.

Cookie Cutter Tool: Quickly crop an object or your entire work area into fun shapes including letters, numbers, animals, and more. Give your project a custom look or create unique captions from photos – the possibilities are endless.

Text Support: Add clever, descriptive, or funny text to your projects. Choose the style and size – you can even place text in thought bubbles or curve it to a built-in or custom path. Then add a drop shadow for that final look.

Properties Bar: Appears below the toolbar when you click a tool to show you all the options for that tool. So you can tweak and customize the effect to get the creative results you want.

Auto-Adjustments: One-click Auto Color Balance, Auto Levels, Auto Sharpen, or Auto Contrast.

Repair Tool: Easily remove blemishes, spots, or scratches from a photo and get the results you’re looking for almost instantly.

Gradients: Apply pre-set color gradients, or create your own and apply them to text and objects in your photos for a blended color scheme that you probably thought only a professional could create.

Batch Processing: Any adjustment effects you want to use can be applied to more than one photo at a time with just a couple of clicks.

What’s new in ACDSee Photo Editor 2008

Advanced text features
Create Custom Text Paths
Add interest to your layout with text that follows your own path. Use the drawing tools to create paths that follow elements in your layout, like the hem of a dress or the flow of a river. Select the Text Tool, then Path and Bind to Path to type directly on your custom path. It’s never been easier to create just the look you want.

Try new Preset Text Paths
Use the preset text paths to complete your projects even faster. Just type the text you want and click on Path on the tool bar. Select one of a number of interesting designs, including the new Spiral, Bracket, Curlicue, Flower, Star, Heart or Leaf paths.

Create Custom Text Shapes
Photo Editor 2008 makes it even easier to add journaling elements to your project. Use the shape drawing tool and select Object | Make Text Shape to wrap your words inside your choice of over 400 available shapes. You can even draw your own custom shape with the Smooth Polygon Tool. Add large journaling blocks into these shapes with ease, by typing inside the shape or pasting your text in from word processing programs like Microsoft Word.

Powerful layout tools

Start with Designer Templates
When you need inspiration to help you get started, try one of Photo Editor’s templates, designed by top designers Andrea Gold, Maggie Lamarre, and Vicki Stegall. Just click File | New From Template and browse through them. Or design your own layouts and save them as templates for future use.

Apply Adjustments Dynamically
With Photo Editor 2008’s new Dynamic Adjustments, you have the freedom to experiment. Apply one or more of over 70 effects like Sepia and Gaussian Blur with the peace of mind of knowing that your original image stays intact. Quickly modify existing effects, switch their order for a different result, delete an effect, or remove them from the object altogether.

Rotate your Crop
With Photo Editor 2008, your cropping selection can easily be rotated to achieve exactly the look you want!

Trim to Shape
Quickly crop an image with any shape with Photo Editor’s new Trim to Shape feature. Use the Shape Tool or create a custom shape or use an object in your layout as the crop outline for your favorite photo. Simply click the Trim to Shape button and create a uniquely shaped image.

Attach Masks
Use a shape or image object to ‘knock out’ areas of another image. The effect is similar to Trim to Shape, but using masks preserves the original image and allows you to blend it with the mask. You can easily remove the mask by selecting Image | Mask | Detach Mask.

Try the new Drop Shadow
Photo Editor 2008’s new default drop shadow provides a more realistic look. Opacity controls are now built directly into the drop shadow dialog for improved ease of use
.

Enhanced Usability

Experience Speed
Complete projects more quickly with the improved speed of ACDSee Photo Editor 2008.

Save to Web
Easily export your photos to JPEG, GIF, or PNG format and preview the results with the new Save to Web feature.

Paste and place
Choose the exact place where you want to paste your objects with the new Paste and Place option. Copy objects and then activate the place cursor by choosing Edit | Paste and Place.

Easily select overlapping objects
Selecting overlapping objects is now even easier with the Select submenu. In an area where objects overlap, right-click and use the Select submenu to select the appropriate object. Objects are listed according to their stacking order, with the top object first.

Use brushes
Easily open, load and use brush files to enhance your layouts. Open an Adobe Photoshop (.ABR) or Corel Paint Shop Pro (.JBR) brush file and define up to ten selected objects as brushes with the Object | Create Brush command.

Update 3 - review from Franck

After the update from Jamey, I’m not sure I’ll dare give my opinion. In a nutshell: it’s a qualitative piece of software, but I’m not that impressed.

I’m must say I’m not a specialist of digital pictures at all. In any case I’m a photoshop master.
I can’t agree with you when you say it’s better than Photoshop element. Both aren’t running in the same category, neither speaking about price nor speaking about functionnalities.

When PSE combines picture management and edition, this program does only edition. But also…

1/ I’m not fond of the interface which I don’t find easy to get through. Notably the right pane is not as useful as it should be.
2/ I surely didn’t see properly, but I didn’t find the histogram or levels graphs. Although I must say the auto fix function is really impressive (at least as good as PSE one, that’s true) I like to have these picture analysis tools to do some manual adjustments, should I like to.
3/ If I remember well, PSE contains some editing layers (contrast layer, hue layer, level layer, gradient leyer…) that allow the user to fix or edit the picture without actually changing anything to the picture pixels ; consequently, you still can adjust your editing settings afterwards…
4/ Speaking about layers, I found the layer management in ACDSEE quite abstruse. Jamey review brought me some light regarding it.
5/ That said, I noticed that ACDSee has some sort of fusion layer, which is quite nice, because PSE has not (although there is a trick to obtain more or less the same result… - using clipping masks) (not sure of the English name of all these items though)
6/ The interactive how-tos are definitely a great feature.
7/ The going digital pdf is intersting

In conclusion : If not talking about money, it’s mainly a question of taste between ACDsee and its competition.
Speaking about money, I’m sure ACDSee offers the best quality-price ratio.
That said, I for one prefer PSE for more advanced editing pictures.
For quick correction and enhancement, I think I prefer PhotoStudio Darkroom (which we got here some times ago). It has a more straightforward interface to me.

Anyway, I’d be unfair saying it’s not top-notch product.
I just feel a little disappointed because I had a very opinion of ACDSee products. But, once again, it’s mainly a matter of personal taste.

.

Update 2 : Here’s the review from Jamey ( DigitalDevo )

I tried this software out for a while tonight. Sick at home with H1N1, it totally sux! But, anyways, the software was quite well equipped with functions and features IMHO.

I truly liked the fact they included some seldom included algorithms for resizing like Lancroz and Mitchell. I also really liked the fact they included many of the same tools Photoshop actually has including Unsharp Mask, Custom Sharpening(which in this case seems to be a type of convolusive sharpening to be exact), many nice artistic features too! The Shadows/Highlights tool is very nice, not quite as nice as Adobe’s, but darn nice for the price point of this software!! The tools were truly fully loaded with just about everything you could ever want!

The noise reduction feature is nice, it is not the best though, however it doesn’t do too terrible of a job. I would still choose http://www.neatimage.com for my NR needs.

Nice to see an almost fully functional curves tool, I can NOT live without curves, it is hands down the most universal and most powerful tool for image editing once you learn how to properly use it.

The color balance tools is excellent and gives some excellent choices to allow for some nice toning features since you can choose entire image, just shadows, just midtones, or just highlights, quite nice! The color equalization was an interesting tool that could be useful.

It was also nice to see a full selection choice of blur tools as well, but an important one lacking is a Lens Blur.

The Artistic Filters were standard, but functioned well.

I was very shocked at how well the Auto Fix tools worked!!! I wouldn’t personally use them, but if I was in a hurry and an image just for me and not for print, I might be very tempted as they truly worked very well. I can see them being top notch for the average user.

Nice choice and brush capabilities in this software and the ability to create and save your own just like PS. It appears you can write and save actions as well, albeit I couldn’t figure it out playing, so will have to check the manual/help.

Everything seems to have a decent layout, but could be better. Still a little clustered IMHO. The addition of the cloning tool and instant red eye tool like PS is a nice touch as well. I wish they would have just let you know that objects are the same thing as layers, would have saved me an hour trying to figure it out, rofl. But nice they included objects/layers at all, that is one thing so many miss and another tool I could not live without! I also like the nice pre-programmed deals that walk you through making wine labels, cd labels, scrapbook pages, etc. Very nice tough for the average user!

I think this software is easily worth the asking price to buy it and would recommend it to anyone from a beginner to about mid-way , or even that advanced user that doesn’t like GIMP but can not afford PS. But definitely a value for the money IMHO.

Jamey

Well when you put it that way, I guess I will give it a try.No I actually was kinda rushed earlier and just saw another photo-related software and considering I have so many I am happy with I deciced to pass. However, after reading your comment on it and some others on the internet, it looks too good to at least not try it.
Its just that 4 Free is killing my hard drive with all the useful software.

With many powerful tools loaded in it, ACDSee Photo Editor 2008 can definitely compete with the latest version of Adobe Photoshop Element. Excellent program! The built-in mini-tutorials are an outstanding piece of work. Most software publishers appear to not think about the user, just about getting the code done. This company obviously tested the program with real live users. Truly exceptional!
The only fault I might find is that this superb help material appears to be only in English. I can understand that: translating into other languages is a huge undertaking.

Thanks a bunch! I was looking forward to using Corel PSP  X, but haven’t had time sit down and get familiar with it. You call this one “the most impressive for us - as average digital photo users”, And if that means just as good and even more simple, I’ll be REALLY pleased! (I like “simple”, since i’m kind of simple, myself. Or maybe just a little lazy.) GREAT POST!!!

    Hi guys…
Import and export image formats + supported file formats can be found here:
    http://files.acdsystems.com/english/support/kb/pe2008/supported_format_pe2008.pdf
Quit impressive imho its needs a bit or more  learning curve to get use to it (a little different approach from its predecessor). Its suffers to open large PSD file with only 1GB of RAM but I found that normal.
Its a keeper for me until..? please answer this for me 4Free…

Unfortunately, I can’t post as often as I use to, haven’t even been able to catch up on a number of the articles in regards to the communities development over the last couple of months, that’s how tied up I’ve been.
Anyway, 4Free, hope you have sorted out the kinks in your notification system and here’s to the ‘GreenRevolution’.
    Thanks!

    1) Fantastic Software! And as Bruce Fraser points out the how-to’s are really helpful. However, I could not find a way to create layers. Am I missing something?

    2) If you register online(click Help->Product Registration) you can download a ebook titled “Going Digital - A Guide to Digital Photography”. Here’s the direct link:-
    http://files.acdsystems.com/english/registration/going-digital.pdf

    3) Regarding email pre-notification, so far I haven’t faced any problems. It works.

    Thanks fake91 & 4Free.

I feel absolutely certain that the problem with your site is, that somewhere there is a timer, and if we use too much time to type our post, we are thrown off.

    1 point
    Hi Curt !
Not at all ! It’s a known WPSpam bug. But we prefer to keep WPSpam plugin ( on this script ) because it is doing a great job against the constant heavy spam attack against 4Free.
Sorry ! ( but I’m sure you can handle it with the copy-paste solution )

Please read this short post,http://www.donationcoder.com/Forums/bb/index.php?topic=19680.msg182278#msg182278, and tell if ghacks is the site we should not quote here at 4Free?

    2 points
    Hi Curt !
This is out of topic but since GHacks has a place in Our Favs Lis ( see sidebar ) … I must admit you have your point. It looks like Martin is rarely quoting his sources ( and he is not the only “important blogger” doing that ).
… But Ghacks has mostly genuine content, you must agree. Nobody can state GHacks is a copy-cat blog.
Anyway it’s not on us to say who’s this or that.
If your question was about this … Our problems are about different sites who are publishing promotions obviously read on 4Free ( revealed for the first time on 4Free ) … One after another … And “forgetting” to give credit.
It’s an obvious lack of respect for the work of our community.
But life is beautiful if we all ignore these stupid problems ! :-)
    Regards !

What can I say? That you ROCK? That you’re GREAT? That this is the BEST community? etc etc etc…
Until few days ago I taught ACDSee didn’t existed anymore, and now we have TWO super products from them! Download from main link really gave me problems, interrupting when was almost finished. Download from Cnet was done using Orbit for speeding up.
When completed, for some reason Orbit didn’t rename the downloaded file and it remained with a .OB! extention. So I just renamed the file and left it with .exe extention and it worked all fine.
Thank you and again for Fake91, who’s doing and showing us some great findings!

If you are lazy (like me) then this is the best photo editor software i have come across because, as Bruce i think it was said, they how to / help section means you don’t have to use too much brain power to get things done.

    29 October, 2009

Many thanks, this is quite good. It will take a little experience with it to decide if I prefer it to Paintshop Pro X.

For Sudip: in ACDSee, Objects take the place of Layers (Photoshop, etc.). I don’t think they’re exact equivelants, but work in much the same way. Go through the excellent How To’s, under the Basics category, and you’ll see the Objects pallette is very similar in look and function. I opened a multi-layered psd file in ACDSee, and every Layer was treated as an Object (unfortunately, the specific Photoshop effects were not preserved, which means in this respect PSP X beats ACDSee).

This seems a fine program in its own right, however.

    cheers all, and thanks

An excellent product with a crisp and intuitive interface. I have not even scratched the surface of ACDSee Photo Editor, but it has already replaced my primary photo editing application. The tools that it offers are outstanding and easy to use, even for a novice like me. I look forward to sitting down to explore the many riches of ACDSee Photo Editor.

Registration was quick and painless, as was installation on my Vista box.

    For Michel:
Yeah I have noticed the objects work in a similar manner like layers but they are not exact equivalent; like you can’t create a duplicate layer. Regarding PSP X I missed it by a whisker. It was 98% and my connection simply give up for an unusually long time. And next day it was gone - the link never worked for a second anymore. :(

But that was the beginning with 4Free (August I Think). And so far the journey has been excellent. :D

Great offer, downloaded on my desktop and my laptop. Thanks for taking my previous wish list to heart and providing something for us photographers.

Still hoping for a program to reduce “noise” in photos. Such as Noise Ninja or Neat Image or whatver you can find.

    ACDSee is great though.

    Thanks again,

    Bill

    Hi Bill !
The “Reduce noise” option from “Adjustements / Noise” - in this ACDSeePhoto Editor 2008n - is not good enough ?

Great! I have Photoshop on my laptop, but it will be good to have a photo editor on my desktop! Thanks to Fake91 and the 4 free team!

  74. 29 October, 2009

Excellent! I have used ACDSee many times before but never their editing software.
I am looking forward to trying this one out when/if I get some free time. I personally use Adobe Photoshop for my needs as most of my work needs to go out for printing of some form or another, and PS is the only software that offers all the Profile support and soft proofing and other printing type preparation functions.
But I am always looking for more affordable software to recommend with my consultations and tutoring on photography and/or image editing. I am curious to see how this will stand up to GIMP and Paint.Net(both free softwares)! Both of those are excellent editing packages but have a rather steep learning curve for many beginners, sadly.
Maybe ACDSee will fill that little niche of being power but easy to use that I am looking for! It looks pretty well fully featured with all the necessary tools! Thanks again!!

Sudip, you _can_ duplicate Objects, though it’s not obvious. Using the Selection Tool (pointer) make sure the Object you want duplicated is selected, then right click with your mouse. The pop up menu gives you a Duplicate option, which creates a copy in the work area and a corresponding entry in the Objects pallette.

    cheers
