The BestS - Best Malware/Adware/Spyware/Scumware Remover ( and Prevention )

Update : From our BestS Heads Up

1. We have not paid attention and this aspect can be misinterpreted with ease.

Like a few friends have already done , ALL READERS ( wanting to help ) SHOULD KINDLY SHARE THEIR CHOICES in the 4Free BestS surveys … And NOT only the “green card owners”.
Why ! Because most of our active readers will go green , sooner or later ( + 200 turning green in November and December 2009 ! ). :)
Once you turn green … Your comments on every BestS survey will also become green … And your choices will be taken into consideration.

2. And ANYWAY, like everything on 4 Free, these surveys are GENUINE and interactive :)
One can reconsider his choices at any given moment. It’s easy to cancel the old choices and take into consideration the new ones.

This way the 4 Free BestS surveys will always be as up-to-date as possible.

.

Hi friends !

We hope the rhythm is not becoming too intensive. Please take your time and participate in these very important “BestS” surveys.

Don’t forget to check the already published The BestS - Best Disk Imaging Software , The BestS - Best Data Backup Software and The BestS - Best Antivirus Software

The “BestS Concept” ( best softwares ) is here to make us talk about the best different solutions … To give some more consistency to the Community way of reviewing different softwares.

Little by little we’ll draw 4 Free conclusions about BestS. Please comment and rate ! ( read below who and how can rate softwares ). This is the target of this section !

… But right now we must be humble and we think our growing community needs some references when we analyze the softwares from the 4Free promotions.

When we’re talking about a certain software domain, we all have in mind different infos, from different sources, about “the best”. But maybe it’s better to establish some “standards” - a starting point - and to have them “before our eyes” ( on 4 Free ) when analyzing different similar application.

At this stage we’ll start be using the qualitative work made by GizmoTechSupportAllert.com ( for freewares ) and TopTenReviews.com ( for sharewares ) … But this doesn’t mean we’ll take their conclusion for granted.  We’ll analyse  - step by step - all those softwares ( we’ll surely have them in 4free promotions ) and finally establish the Top 4Free BestS.

Important note : the owners of 4Free greencards (ONLY) are asked to kindly share :

1. Their “normal” feedback about this subject ( any 4Free reader is kindly invited to do it )

2. Their own Top 3 for every software domain … in case they have been in the situation to try three solutions. FYI each software you name will receive 5 points ( no1) , 3 points ( no 2 ) and 1point ( no 3 ). If you only name one or two solutions they’ll be consider as “your no 1 ( or 2 )”.

… But please take your time! Do it when you have the time, and you have something to say. :-)

( Why only the green 4Free’ers ? Because these are Community surveys, drowing official conclusions of our community … And we want feedbacks from proven friends.  We shouldn’t worry about the “limited” 100 actual owners of 4 Free Green Cards ; because next month there will be other one hundred … Plus almost one hundred in December. ) :-)

.

But any 4Free reader is free to comment and share their opinion, of course ! Please do it ! Again: This is the target of this section !

I don’t trust TopTenReviews.com. No way, not when they also sell the products they are reviewing. Unconsciously or consciously (and my bet is the latter), they are influenced by the money they make by their recommendations. I’ll give two examples:

    1) Sync software: http://sync-software-review.toptenreviews.com/. They include only pay-for software, completely ignoring some freeware programs which are better than what’s on their list (such as Microsoft’s SyncToy).

    2) Registry Cleaners: http://www.registry-repair-software-review.toptenreviews.com/. They don’t include jv16 PowerTools. Fred Langa (whom I DO trust!) did a thorough test of this notoriously dubious category, found that many commercial products were outright frauds, and gave the top honour to jv16 PowerTools (www.informationweek.com/news/windows/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=171203805). That test is four years old, but jv16 is still Fred’s recommendation today. Why do they exclude jv16 PowerTools? My guess is that the publisher refuses to pay them their fee for “reviewing” their software.

TopTenReviews.com is purely a money-making machine. Don’t trust it for any reviews at all!

    Hi Bruce !
You shouldn’t worry ! We have chosen Top 10 Reviews just as a comparaison list. Slowly - with your contribution - we’ll have our 4Free list ( and forget about Top Ten REVIEWS )
The freewares are treated separately, anyway.
Now what about your choices ?
    Regards !

I have used Spybot Search & Destroy for a few years now, and have found it to be the best, with the most options for repair or recovery. Adaware went the way of Norton’s Antivirus, a bloated, over promoted fail whale that accepts payments form vendors to not be included, much like Microsoft was doing. With Spybot, I have never used a commercial solution, nor needed to.

I would have put Spybot at the very top.

IOBIT Security 360 PRO is free for right now and it seems to do a great job, I have advanced System Protector, which is really pretty good and Super Anti-Spyware free edition. SInce adding IOBIT it has jumped in twice and caught tracking software the other two missed.
I use Avira free edition for my virus protection but I’m thinking about going to the premium edition because I’ve had my computer for nearly a year and it has done a great job of protecting it.
Right now I download a lot of software through your site and Raymonds site and get licenses but next year I will buy what seems to work.
I wish I had got into the JV16 download because their free Light version seems real good.
I have bought Ashampoo WinOptimizer 6 and plan to buy their uninstall 4 because even though their software might not be the best it is all pretty darn good and I’ve downloaded a lot of their software for free so I feel like I should support them some.
Paragon is another company I need to buy something from because their software is good and I have a lot of free downloads from them.
You guys introduce me to the company and if I like them I use them. Unfortunately I deleted a lot of downloded software before I installed it because I didn’t have a need for it when I downloaded it but planed on giving it a try.
The last camera IO had was a Nikon F2A and it wasn’t digital and I’m still kind of scared to download movies so I hadn’t installed picture software or movie software yet. I plannned on doing so soon.
You all give me an idea which companies turn out good software and which ones don’t, please keep up the good work.

Glad to see such articles on 4Free. I think what first drew some of us to 4free the promos of software that one would previously need to pay for. However, there are many excellent free software out there just waiting to be discovered. Hope 4Free will become THE portal for anyone seeking quality, free stuff on the internet.
Hi Wob! Count on it! ( with your participation, like always ). Best regards !
Anyway, about this topic, I’ve tested ThreatFire ( 5 points) previously, and have no problems with it. Being a behaviour-based scanner, it does pop up alerts for legitimate software, but they are not too annoying in my opinion.

Oops… got blocked by the spam filter earlier…

  6. 1 November, 2009

Personally I find that Malwarebyte’s AntiMalware Free version is better than AdAware. Too bad that the free version does not include realtime scanning.

Guys i may seem to be arrogant or even naive ti some others but i don’t use antispyware programs. I trust my kaspersky IS to do the job.. (And of course a good backup software for the worst case scenario.. i used to have a sandbox too, but i forget to run it so i removed it :)
At work they make us use the new MS suite and i could say that although i am impressed i have my kaspersky reovery cd with me and also aSquared 4,5 with the license you provided for us :o)

The best tool for spyware removing is Webroot Spy Sweeper 5 points(at least it never let me down in the past when I had problems), imho.
As for freewares-I think Spyware Terminator 5 pointswould be my choice if could not by any chance use Webroot.

Hi friends,I must say I really like this concept you started.
Don’t want to pretend that I am a genius on this field, however I had many many problems with my pc in this area, and I had the opportunity to try most of the solutions belonging to this subject.
On top of my recomandation would be(and I’m pretty sure many ppl here agree with me) Avira Antivir Free 5 points.Altough the advertising every time you update is a bit annoying,if viruses make your life hell and want the best protection the freeware world has to offer, this is No.1,nothing beats it,not even all those big names out there. Every time I switched away from it,my pc was soon infected.
No.2 would be Super Antispyware Free 3 points.Even if it doesn’t protect in real-time,it does one hell of a job removing the nasties you gathered. It really is super.
As for No.3…eh,tough decision. For this place I would nominate RegRun Reanimator 1 point. If,despite all the best protection,a virus makes it through the shields into your system(and we know it happens :) ) then this tool can help you identify the threat,by scanning the system in boot-time,thus disallowing the virus to load itself automtically, and then remove it.But be careful, this tool is really powerful, and if you delete the wrong thing, you may end up with an unusable system. All you need to know here is the exact name of the nasty,so the program can rip it out from it’s roots.
There are many more good software out there, like spybot or Threatfire just to name a few,but believe me,I would trust my life to these 3 goodies.
    Hope it helped :) Regards!

Spybot and Ad-aware are outdated, they don’t even catch 50% of what’s out there. They once were the best, but but were passed left and right by many others. Of which mbam and a-squared are probably the best right now. Both are available as shareware AND freeware. The freeware versions offer no resident protection, but the scanner is otherwise the same.

But isn’t this really a popularity contest, rather than a quality contest?

    5 points
Thank you for your reaction gh !
You are right : for the moment it looks like a popularity contest … But we’ll all work it and make it a real 4 Free Rating Tool.

    Hi there.
I’m rather new here - been following you for around three months now (a pitty I didn’t find out about this site earlier, great work & stuff!!). I decided to jump in now as I’m sort of obsessed with security and keeping my PC clean (which is already some years old). I’ve tried out several tools (freeware and commercial). One thing I’ve learned is that commercial is not necessary better than freeware (especially when it comes to on-demand scanners/ cleaners).
I agree with y0himba about Ad-Aware (and Norton) - installed & uninstalled the latest free version in one day.
Never liked much PC Tools products - last experience with SpywareDoctor was rather negative (too heavy on resources and did not work well with KIS). Neither did Spyware Terminator.
    My weekly routine now includes:
    Freeware
    1. SuperAntiSpyware - lucks realtime protection but still great.
    2. Malwarebytes - agree with Adrian about the realtime protection, but still one of the best.
    3. Spybot - Immunize feature combined with SpywareBlaster.
ThreatFire is also solid (though it’s PC Tools product).
Also, GMER is great for Rootkits.

    Realtime + On demand
    Commercial
    1. aSquared Anti-Malware 4,5 (thanks to you) - my realtime antivirus protection as well combined with Online Armor Firewall.
    2. KIS - but really heavy on resources, especially on booting.
    3. ESET NOD32 - lighter than KIS, still very effective (though my experience goes back to more than two years).
I also used to run Mamutu (thanks to Gizmo’s) with KIS (before switching to aSquared Anti-Malware 4,5+Online Armor Firewall), which did a really good job.
Finally, I lately tried out Trojan Remover which does, besides on demand, a scan when booting (seemed nice, though I can’t really say as the last time I got infected with something was back in summer 2008).

Of course, common sense is your #1 protection tool.
I hope this is not too much for a 1st comment here.

    5 points
    Thank you !
Any real 4Free reader is invited to comment about softwares.
… So it cannot be “too much”.

This is absolutely a good idea. To get reliable feedback from people for rating software applications.
For the current category (adware/spyware/etc.) I cannot add much since I have always used commercial software for this. Only stuff from freeware/shareware section I use is an add-on for Firefox, “Adblock Plus” (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865). While they recommend subscribing (free) to some filter providers (who continuously update the list of filters used to identify advertisements), the software addon works well out-of-the-box with some very trivial custom filters like */ad/* etc.

    Hi Alok !
“Commercial” goes in “sharewares” so please share the softwares you have experienced in this field. Thank you !

you’ve really got to fix that Spam filter problem. I can’t be bothered to reproduce my long comments on this, and you shouldn’t expect your audience to jump through hoops to ensure comments are posted - that’s your job.

    2 points
    You’re absolutely right! Sorry !
Regarding “Our audience” .. They are virtual friends - people like us trying tyo do something for better software promos.
This is why there are so many kind comments ( yours included )… even against this temporary annoying bug ( well known for WPSpam - but we prefer it to the huge amount of spams )
Please don’t forget to copy your text before submitting the comment. The second time you just have to paste it .
The new script will eliminate this bug.

I have Avast and Comodo installed on my PC and Its been one and a half years there are no adware, spyware or secumware installed on my PC. I  tested several progs from Gizmo’s list and liked SUPERAntiSpyware but since its an on demand scan which I thought a little bit disappointed,  un-installed.
Well… I would be happy to take another test (again) to completed your surveys (freeware only).

    1. TreatFire 5 points
    2. SUPERAntiSpyware 3 points
I would like to add TendMicro HijackThis 1 point to accompany and complete your defends and knowledge.

ps: Gizmo’s page “Best Free Adware/Spyware/Scumware Remover” has been updated ( Sun, 11/01/2009 ) there for your image is not valid anymore.

This new category will definitely be realling instructing, I think.
Unfortunately, I can’t say a lot for this first serie.

I used for a long time TrendMicro Internet Security . This program uninstalls everything else when you install it. So I got used to rely on TrendMicro only, even for adwaren spyware, scumware threats.
Now I moved to Kasperski and use Kaspersky only.

Before TrendMicro, I once tried adaware, but had problems with it (It totally messed up nmy win Me - if I well remember)
I used for many years Spybot SD, never had a problem with it… I was really sad the day Trend told me I’d better kick it away.
All this was a very long long time ago… So it’s pure nostalgia, but I’d give a vote in favor of Spybot 3 points.

That said, KIS2010 is a very good, efficient and complete security solution :)

Of course. It will look better in time ( and with much more voters )

    Hi guys !
First of all I use Avira Free 5 points. And I have also kept active Windows Defender (2) 1 point
I was happy with Malwarebytes (1) 3 points before grabbing the impressive aSquared ( 1°)5 points( thank you 4Free ! ) Sorry but the last one is the only shareware I have ever used in this domain.
I like the BestS concept ! Regards !

Good idea … here’s my small contribution:
    Freeware choices …
    1. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (use on-demand only)5 points
    2. SuperAntiSpyware (use on-demand only)3 points
    3. IOBit Security 360 (real-time)Thank you Mike … but we won’t consider the Security Suite in this survey. They’ll have their place, of course.
Not currently using any shareware choices, but have used PC Tools Spyware Doctor 5 points, A-Squared 3 points and SanboxIE in the past.

I’ve really never like Avira, the whole updater issue just doesn’t sit well with me. I used to use Avast! for all my antivirus needs, but now I use Microsoft Security Essentials instead. It works great and is guaranteed to be compatible with W7 since it is designed and updated by Microsoft.

    2 points
    Hi D-rock !
You have never tried some specialized Adware/Spyware/Scumware Removers ? ( and not security suites )
    Thank you!

Today I only use the basics:
Freeware 5 points to Firefox 3.5
Shareware 5 points to Outpost Security Suite
    Your bad, my loss!(?) ;-)

    2 points
    Hi Curt!
This doesn’t really help our survey, indeed.
“Fortunately” you’re not the owner of a 4Free greencard, yet.
But you will soon become one … So maybe THEN you’ll kindly give us your choices from the listed alternatives.

  27. Ricky
    1 November, 2009

For sure my number one choice free malware remover would be Avira Antivir Free 5 points.I recommend this to everyone who wants my advice on computers as it’s detection rates are usually excellent especially for a freebie.
The only down side that I have come across with it is the nag screen which most people can live with abd there are ways to disable it,and the occasional slowness of the updates.
Second in my list is Super Antispyware 3 points. It is a great on demand scanner and helped me out when a business friend’s computer got infected with some keylogger nasties.
I don’t really have a number 3 though I would like to mention that while not strictly a remover I would recommend a product called Returnil which creates a virtual environment of your PC which would protect your OS from getting infected.

    Thank you Ricky!
    You mean … this Returnil ? :-) ( article from October 1, 2008 !)
    http://for-free-on-internet.com/2008/10/returnil-%E2%80%93-the-dreamed-protection/

  28. Ricky
    2 November, 2009

Yea that’s the one though Returnil have recently just brought out a 2010 version which includes a combo of antivirus/malware as well as the virtual system. It comes with a paid and free version.I haven’t tried this new version yet though I will give it a go in the next couple of weeks.

and the winner, contains … ASK BAR!

    Hi !
Thank you for participating on 4Free!
Unfortunately it seems you’re too smart to understand what a survey means.
I can assure the tests and comparaisons will come later, with the participation of a few hundreds 4 Free’ers … This survey is just a starting point.
But if you only need fake reviews and tests … with pathetic conclusions … from a 20 years old ( LOL ! ) “guru” ( actually immitating all he’s seeing on 4Free ) … with a strange megalomaniac habit of talking to and about himself under different personalities … I can recommend you “the one”. ( Oh wait ! You might know “him” already ! )
Next time try and be polite, please.
    Regards !

  30. 2 November, 2009

    For me anti-spyware/malware freeware:
    1. MVPS Hosts File w/ Hostman if need a GUI 5 points
    2. SpywareBlaster 3 points
    3. SuperAntiSpyware 1 point

    Shareware/Paid:
    1. AniVir 5 points
    2. aSquared 3 points
    3. Webroot 1 point

I also like to use SandBoxie or a Virtual System for unknown or suspect software. I also like SpyBot S&D and have found it very useful. For cleaning up systems I like to use a BartPE custom made disc or ThumbDrive with all the tools necessary and just boot to it. :). I also prefer AcronisTI prior to version 10 for keeping up to date backups for restorations in case of non-fixable infections/catastrophes.

Since I too like to prevent rather then fix, I use either Winsonar or WinPatrol for HIPs.

Probably would add Hitman Pro to the spyware remover list.
It is free until the first cleaning is needed but then that starts a 30 day trial.  It is cloud based but the engines it uses are Avira, Gdata (Bitdefender & Avast) , Nod32, A-squared and Prevx.
The free version also includes options for a boot scan and context menu scanning.  Pretty nice if you ask me.

My favorite is a-squared. I also use malwarebytes.
My firewall is the free one from pc tools.
I have used windows defender, spybot, and adaware in the past, but have found that they miss too much. Therefore, I prefer a-squared and the pc tools suite.

Hello. I use to use Adaware before I discovered SpyBot Search And Destroy. I liked the look and feel of Adaware more but found SS&D was more effective at eradicating nasties.
Another tool that I used was Hijack this, maybe not very helpful for a non-technical person but the log files were an incredible resource for some.
I have to admit that I am using MS Defender and no issues found thus far.

    Enjoy!

Here are my choices regarding Best Adware/Spyware/Scumware Remover (PC) after installing and reading all the post:-

    1) MalwarebytesAntimalware(An On demand scanner not a realtime protection)
    2) SuperAntispyware(This is too an on demand scanner)
    3) Paretologic XoftSpy (its too a good one but being a shareware not used by everybody)
    4) A-Squared Free
    5) Spybot S&D

All the above have limitations regarding realtime protection but if you use ZA(Zonealarm) its really effective in detecting the incoming threats but due to its annoying popup nobody wants to install it (since no one has got the full knowledge of removing it or not bcoz sometimes the spyware goes into the rootkit/registry and by deleting the same might be ur ‘OS’ becomes unstable)

In comparison to Freeware with the Paid Ones the Professional Version’s are really more effective.
It also depends on the user’s liking and disliking of the particular software whether he is satisfied with the performance of Antispware or its GUI or its familiarity or not?
“NONE OF THE PC’S IN THIS WHOLE WWW ARE FREE OR IMMUNE FROM ANY OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED ANTISPYWARE SOFT’S ,BCOZ DAILY THEY RELEASE THE NEW DEFINITIONS AND IT GET WORN OUT INSTANTLY BCOZ A NEW THREAT ALREADY HAS KNOCKED THE DOOR”

    SO THE BOTTOMLINE IS:-

A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE IS REQUIRED TO GET THE MAXIMUM PROTECTION
Ps., (THESE ARE MY PERSONAL VIEWS ,SEE A COIN IS ALSO HAVING TWO SIDES SAME IS WITH THE PERSON TO PERSON ,WHAT HE LIKES MIGHT BE THE OTHER ONE IS NOT SATISFIED WITH HIS/HER VIEWS)

SO EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON THE USER’S CHOICE ITSELF

    THANKS & TC

This is really good idea. Hope its a big success so that
everyone could benefit from it (including me) !

Well i have used SpyBot Search&Destroy some 4 years ago
and at that time its was really doing good job. After that i have
been using Webroot Spy Sweeper (Shareware). So i really
dont know how the present day performance of SpyBot is.
And also about other freewares, i don’t know. This is because
since i started using Webroot, its doing great job and i was
not in need of other ones.
At the early times when none of the softwares helped me in
removing those deadly spywares/scumwares, Webroot really
rescued me from some worst scenarios. Since then i have
been using this. It really blocks everything, even trojans and
    rootkits.
Great blocking capability and fast scanning are its pros.
Another great thing i love about this product is, it doesnt show
any false positives. It is really solid and trustworthy !!
Off course there is a con - it makes system slow when it
updates(that only for few seconds, so no problem to me).

The free trail only scans for issues and doesn’t remove
anything. So i hope the makers give the full working product
during the trail period, without any limitations.
So i would go with 5 points for Webroot.
I really don’t know why this product is not quite famous.
Its nice to see Dave using Webroot !!

Ok I know you are not smart to put all your egg in one basket.
You shoud use more then 1 anti virus. I use to use adaware and still would buy when I upgraded to Kaspersky 10 it said it had a issue with adaware so I had to uninstall it.
I have used macafee, Norton, Zone Alarm, and Trend Micro and I love Kaspersky. I have paid for it the last 2 years and will pay for the next 2 years.
Now for adware I use I orbit 360 pro (free) and it seems to be doing ok. I also run . Malwarebytes free about once a week. I also use Advance system care pro that I also got for free and I think that help alot and it is easy to use. I have had false positive from 360 and a coupel from .
Malwarebytes put you should always be carful. Thats it seems like alot but I go to any website I want and I dont have any viruses

    Hi Guys,

Much as I would like to help with this category, I can’t. My ISP has been providing its customers with free copies of Internet security software for the last 7 or 8 years. Most recently they have provided a customized version of Kaspersky security software. Prior to that it was Norton’s Internet Security.

Over that period of time, I have never had to remove a virus or do battle with malware and I have been to some very questionable places. In fact, occasionally I check my security logs and have seen several instances of attacks having been blocked. Thanks to my ISP, Rogers, I have never had to pay a cent for that security. Well, not a visible cent because I know that cost is buried in my monthly fee.

Perhaps I do have something to offer. People should check with their ISPs to see if the ISPs provide Internet security software free or nearly free. It is after all, in the ISP’s best interest to do so because such software helps prevent overuse or misuse of the ISPs network assets. If your computer is safe and secure, it won’t be enlisted into the army of so called zombie PCs, sending out spam and malware which can cause excessive use of the network.

Take care and have a good day.

  42. 2 November, 2009

Yes, sorry, it is Avira, I mistyped, lol.

  43. 3 November, 2009

One I don’t see mentioned is one many probably aren’t aware of. It is Online Armor ++ by tallemu.com Most have heard of the firewall, but this pay version uses the Ikarus/a-squared engine for it’s anti-malware and combined with the HIPS and firewall capabilities should be more than enough to keep a computer clean.
Plus the a-suared engine is one of the best at the moment and tallemu is working to use their Oasis database to cut down on false positives. This is the anti-malware to keep your eyes on…

    5 points
You’re right but maybe we should keep Online Armor ++ for the Security Suite list.

Great info here, 4 FREE!!! Maybe we can help a developer come up with the perfect combination of all our favorite anti malware programs (4 free of course) all rolled into 1 very nice program!
Why must we have so many programs to do essentially 1 thing…keep our computers safe?

Here are my favorites: Super Anti Spyware 5 points, malware bytes 3 points, A squared 5 points.
I have tried others, but these are my for right now favorites.
I also was told to use a hardware AND a software firewall to help out so maybe that is also why I haven’t had many problems.

I’ve been using PC Tools ‘Spyware Doctor’ 5 points for years now & I have found that it is the only anti-spyware/virus that I can trust 99%. And with the new build it manages to catch every single dodgy file & website that I have thrown at it. The best bit is that it can still be grabbed for free with the ‘Westpac’ free ‘PC Tools Internet Security’ offer that has been running forever!

I still use the other big freeware ones like Spybot 2 points, AdAware 2 points, Malwarebytes 2 points & aSquared free 2 points but they are only there for a second opinion for scanning from the context menu as Pc Tools never leaves them anything to detect!

Ok, I finally have a chance to give my feedback.
The two freeware security softwares that I always have on my pc are Malwarebytes 5 points and AdAware. 3 points
For the nasty stuff which is ever so present today on the internet, I have found nothing better than Malwarbytes. If I ever get any type of virus on my pc I instantly go to Malwarebytes even before my main av program.
The only reason that I use AdAware it that it is fast and efficient. I agree that there is a huge amount of programs that are much better at scanning and that also offer real-time protection but I just like AdAware because its smart scan is incredibly quick.
As to sharewares, I dont really have any on my pc other than my main av and the a-squared 5 points that I got from here.
However, so far that has worked great so I guess I would say that is the main shareware I use.
This BestS section is a great concept and I know it will continue to get better.

I’m with “fake91″ preferring prevention to cure so tend to rely on Sandboxie or Shadew Defender. The last time I was infected was back in the mid 1990s so my experience of how well these softwares clean malware is clearly severely limited. In terms of usability and lightness however I would rate the following highly, and those with real time detection have all at some time sprung into life to keep the machine clean.

Freeware: I find it difficult to split Avast and Avira as they are both very capable anti virus softwares.
I have never experienced the slow updates with Avira that people often refer to, and the nag screen is easily controlled. It also offers more scanning options than Avast. Having said that Avast (minus the awful default skin) tends to be my number 1 at the moment. In fact they both coexist happily on the same machine - yes, I know, I can see people’s hands shooting up in horror already. Avast 5 points serves as the main av, and Avira (with realtime monitoring disabled and updates set to silent) 3 points happily sits in the background until it is called upon to scan a file. Both softwares are so well behaved that they do not interfere with each other. Hopefully Avast 5 will be as accommodating.
My other Freeware choice would be Windows Defender 1 point which happily coexists with pretty much anything.
As for Shareware, aSquared 4,5 5 points followed by Spyware Doctor 3 points and PrevX 1 point would be my choices.

    HiJackThis a malware remover ?
No no no… I disagree… It’s a worthy program, but classifying it in this adware/scumware/spyware remover is misleading for the vast majority of users.

That’s true, you can “fix” things through it. But actually you can fix things that are perfectly normal and legit as this soft cannot discrimine between what is malware and what is not.
Even TrendMicro advises not to use the “fix” feature unless you are a computer expert.

And, as a matter of fixing, it’s often deleting a file or a registry key… things than you can usually clean through the explorer and regedit.
Usually only… because a malware may have disabled some windows standard features… and in this case, if you know what you’re doing, the hijack this “fix” feature can turn to be very useful

Understand why I think it is misleading to put hijack this in THIS very category.
As clearly as I can understand Hijack This purpose, I’d say it’s aiming at creating reports on what’s running and what’s auto-starting with windows.
In a nutshell, it’s not a “remover” if you ask me, it’s a powerful diagnostic tool.

That said, as a diagnostic tool, I much prefer Eset SysInspector which provides much more user-friendly and comprehensive reports.
    http://www.eset.com/download/sysinspector.php

But as it has no “fix” feature - or I didn’t find it - no one could ever be tempted to categorize it as a remover…

Interesting 26Dolphins… Thanks for the tips about hijackfree which I didn’t know about.
I just tried its standalone version and I’ll keep it safe in my usb stick.

That said, it provides real-time information, like the standard windows task manager, Anvir Task Manager or Sysinternal process explorer + sysinternals Autoruns…
I won’t discuss here the differences, qualities and drawbacks of each, but maybe we will have some day the occasion.

HijackThis and eset sysinspector are reporting tools. They’re doing a cliché of the system at a precise moment of time.
Imagine a friend of yours, knowing haw tech-savvy you are ask you to clean his computer of malwares, and to optimize it… You create a report and can look at it in depth calmly, later, when you’re back home… (loading backyour friend report in the software) For this usage, you would use sysinspector.
Now imagine you want to ask advice on a forum. You’d use hijackthis : less information, but a report in plain text easy to cut and paste to post… (whereas sysinspector’s are xml report needing the sysinspector program to be parsed)

    That’s said, that’s only my 2 pennies…

Hello to all of you out there in “For Free” land. In regards to the premise of this article, Let me preface my reply by stating the following: I have never purchased a single piece of software, of any sort, for any purpose. I find the plethora of freeware and free shareware available on the internet, at the present, more than sufficient to meet my needs. I can not recall ever looking for a particular type of software to meet a certain need, or fulfill an intended objective, and not finding an appropriate, and fully legal, solution from the aforementioned categories. Now, granted, I have, over time, built up a robust stable of such applications, such that, for the most part, nowadays, I fulfill all of my needs “in-house”, as it were. It is only on the rare occasion that, for me, a need or desire mandates a web search for the purposes of obtainment.
For illustrative purposes, I put forth the following items for your consideration: I currently hold thirty-three licenses for various Ashampoo products, all legally obtained via various promotions and giveaways. Whilst I am not the biggest cheerleader of all things Ashampoo and would not voluntarily attest to the universal high quality and merchantability of their offerings, I hold them in reserve, shoul I ever need them. At the present, I have only four pieces of their software installed-Office 2008, Photo Commander 7, Burning Studio 9 and WinOptimizer 5. And, truth be told, I rarely use these, as my preferences for the functions and usability that they provide lies elsewhere. But, when I need them to serve one very specific purpose or another, they are available to me. Currently, my free library consists of approximately six hundred categorized and filed programs, with probably eight hundred or so programs enqueued, in need of proper categorization and filing. Needless to say, not all of these are installed on my machine. Revo Uninstaller informs me that at the present I have 317 user installed applications in residency (I have become quite lazy with the passing of time and no longer, as concerning my machine, run quite as tight a ship as I have in the past. This fact concerns me little, however, as it is quite a capable one-any problems which arise are quickly solved.).
Now, with that bit of background in hand, let us discuss my views on the best (no cost) anti-malware available today. I utilize the following three programs, listed in the order in which I hold them in esteem:
    1)PC Tools’ Threatfire
    2)IOBit Security 360 Pro
    3)SpyBot Search & Destroy.
Threatfire, at its maximum setting, is my primary line of defense. I find its lightweight footprint and heavyweight detection abilities to be nonpareiled.
IOBit Security 360 Pro serves as my second layer of defense and performs well in this role.
And finally, what can I say about SpyBot? Whilst there are better anti-spyware platforms available, I am, I suppose, of the sentimental type and just do not wish to see an old friend depart. Has he not served me well? How could I possibly send him out into the cold, dark and lonely night which is software obsolescence? And so he remains. Faithful to my friend, I shall be, to the bitter end. Which is not to say ,that I do not render unto him some assistance in his advancing age, for I do, primariy augmenting his protection with SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition, although other anti-spyware utilities are wont to take my fancy from time to time. And let me not forget the worthwhileness of an up-to-date hosts file.
And this is the sum of my active protection scheme. I run no firewall (a simple router to provide my wireless connectivity is my external face), nor do I have installed any sort of exhaustive anti-virus security suite. I prefer the simplicity and speed which the lack of the two aforementioned items affords me. The occasional a-squared Free scan augments my peace of mind, as concerning the absence of both a firewall and exhaustive security suite. I also perform the occasional backup of important data, as a precaution. In short, I very rarely have any problems with malware. And should any problem arise, I have an arsenal of useful and dedicated tools with which to dispatch it , and quickly.

For the security of my computer I rely on a few software (including a good firewall). I am not a pro so my choices may not be the best but they work for me (at least for now).
    Freeware :
Avira Antivir Free (but I am not happy with the way the updates do work (or not))
    Spybot and AdAware
Shareware: I do not use any of them so I have no opinion.

Hi All, just trying to catch up and do my part!

    For antispy free:
    1. Super AntiSpyware
    2. MalwareBytes AntiMalware
    3. Spybot

The first two are good all around performers but Spybot still has some nice features and usually helps out on tough cases, for example: when a program keeps trying to add itself to startup after having disabled it, Spybot’s “Tea Timer” will ask if you want to allow it.

    Paid for stuff:
    1. Avira Premium Security Suite - what I currently use.
I’ve had Norton in the past, it came with the computer, but I will never buy Norton/McAfee/Symantec product! I’ve heard the latest version is great but I won’t touch it. That’s all I’ve paid for, all the other stuff I’ve used was free.

I’ve used Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware in the past (not taken into consideration); but, as has already been noted, they seem to miss more than they used to.
I’ve also used the starter version of Spyware Doctor. That’s the version that you can get through the Google Pack. It’s free, but can remove what it finds, unlike the free version available from the PC Tools website shareware 5 points. It’s really pretty good for a program that anyone can get for free.
I’m currently using PC Tools Internet Security which incorporates anti-virus and anti-spyware in one program. I have found this to work extremely well. At the same time I’m using Malwarebytes AntiMalware (free) freeware 5 points just for additional protection. It works very well also.

Haven’t used many programs in this category as i haven’t had a problem for a long time so stuck with the ones i had.
I had Mcafee for 2 years when i bought the PC and never had a problem. This has run out and i am using a squared sharewares 5 points from the recent promotion and i find this stops everything.

well.. to add my (little) bit..i use the following combination as my defense [against dark arts :) ]
    Freeware
    1.  Avira antivirus.
    2.  Threatfire.
3.Spyware blaster. though it lacks real time scanning..but its system protection feature along with flash and active X controls are quite handy.

I have also used mal awarebytes, super antispyware, spyware doctor and drivesentry in the past. Drive sentry is good (prefer it over threatfire) but its no more free. And if i ever was to invest my money in an antivirus..it wud be NOD32.

    Hello!
I strongly suggest Avira , either the Free version or the Paid Version. But please, if we talk about the Premium, it’s better not to install the firewall included in it, but to rely on another product (like PcTools Firewall, for instance, that is free, easy to configure and not too invasive). Sorry about the “almost” long absence!

Last week, my Vista machine went the way of the Dodo bird. I rescued the secondary hard drive from it and put it back in my old XP machine that I had kept (Hooray for nostalgia) but had to go buy RAM because that old faithful just had 256 MBs.

With 2 GBs of memory installed (its maximum), I was then able to run it without stressing about the slowness.

I then had to reinstall almost all my programs (including the HFs) because of the nuked C: drive, often enduring frustrating research to get all codes and installers back (Promos being outdated, codes and installers being lost on drive C: without backups).

This process is still under way but I can at least function (internet and most programs are up).

Anyhoo, here I am, a little woozy from lack of sleep and the common cold but ready to participate.

    My current choices are:

    Freeware:

    Avira free*
    MalwareBytes Anti-Malware*
    Spybot Search and destroy*

*As long as you keep them up to date!

    Shareware:

Mamutu (even if I’m unable to make it work now because of the dodo)

I have used these three freewares (Threatfire, Ad-Aware 2008 and TrendMicro HijackThis) in the past but no longer because the first clashes with Online Armor, the second became a bloated monster and the last one is quite “headache inducing” when you try to make quick sense of it.

(no conflicts) I managed to get a pro license from a giveaway for online armor and have been very satisified with it. I also use trend housecall from time to time just to be sure.

Hello 4Free Team! I have certainly experimented with quite a number of adware/spyware/scumware choices for software — both free and commercial.
Here’s where I have ended up for my best perfoming choices.
For freeware….(1) Malwarebytes’ Anti-malware — always seems to find things the other software misses!; (2) SuperAntiSpyware free — sometimes long for analysis, but VERY thorough and consistent; (3) Threatfire.
For shareware…(1) a-squared — thorough sweep and user-friendly interface; (2) Iobit security 360 - quick and efficient; and (3) AdAware Pro.
Each has different strengths and weaknesses, and the key is to find the best combination that works in concert with your active antivirus software!

Perhaps Sandboxie doesn’t belong in this category, but I consider it my best antispyware/antimalware program.
Along with Spyware Blaster 3 points they help keep the problems out of my computer. I also use Threat Fire 3 points, in case something gets by. Since my computer is usually problem free (and I do lots of downloading) I give them each a 5.
I have run Malwarebytes Antimalware 1 point, Asquared free 1 point and AdAware free 1 point, but seldom find a problem. I guess they deserve a 3, because they do their jobs. I also ocassionally check using the free online programs, but they don’t show anything.

I used to use Ad-aware and Spybot and spyware blaster. All very good products. But since trying out some new software from here and learning more from the Matouzec site I now use:

1: A-squared (wow, really improved a lot, much smaller update files).
    2: Super Anti-Spyware (Caught 99% as with a-squared)
    3: Avira AntiVir personal

Haven’t been here for a while, so I hope I’m doing this right.

    1) a-squared Anti-Malware - I love this software. High detection rates.
    2) Avira AV Premium - Not really for ‘adware or spyware’ I think, but the WebGuard and Firewall features stop me from accessing potentially dangerous websites, so it has a good preventive measure.
    3) Spybot Search & Destroy - I’m not using this now because that would be an overload, but when I did, it saved my computer from a crash and was the only software that could allow me restore it by getting rid of the malware, so I would still highly recommend this software.

My fourteen year old step-daughter with her MySpace and friends have found ways to stop my computer. The worst one was Comodo’s Bioclean(?). I once in a while will download one or two of the programs mntioned above in other comments and run them after I scan with my two programs and come up with a few cookies. I also like to use Microsoft programs to fix my computer or clean it up. I found some great ideas at
    The Road to Know Where—http://bhandler.spaces.live.com/default.aspx?wa=wsignin1.0&sa=983276302

he offers a lot great advice on Microsoft programs present and future offerings, I would suggest remembering his site.

    Freeware I tried:
    MSE
    Avira antivir

    Shareware I tried:
    a-squared
    Panda suite
    PC tools suite
    Micro Trend suite

Currently using MSE with a-squared. I stopped using Micro Trend a while ago when I saw the poor scores it received. PC Tools messed with my wireless connection and slowed my system down. Panda worked fine, and Avira is great, but it liked to “hang” during auto update. I don’t think I have paid for any of them, as most have offered one year licenses for free - thanks 4 free!

since my computer is an old piece , I use only free ware and the one I got the news from here such as zone alarm A squred .. after testing the two it really slow down my computer and had to uninstall them.. it does not fit to my computer.. may be when my new computer arrived then I will try them again later.. At the moment I use Malwarebytes AntiMalware 5 points and it fits to my computer reqiurement which does not slow down my computer.. as always my real line of defence is returnil and sandboxie.. I hope ur team wll include both the s/ware in the future survey.. thank you in letting me in your survey

Advanced System Care & IOBit Security 360 are my top choices
I tried Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware but the resources offset the benefit.
A-Squared Anti-Malware and Spybot Search and Destroy are 2 popular products, but I have found them to be a bit difficult to manage and control.
WinPatrol, Windows Defender, and AnVir Task Manager have good points (they work) and bad (high overhead and many false positives).

    Hello,
I have been using security products (generally speaking) for more than 10 years.
I started with antiviruses (Norton and AVP) and with the very first spyware detection tools : GRC Optout (somebody still remembers it ?) and moved to Zone Alarm and then to Lavasoft AdAware.
I have been using Sygate personal Firewall and Lavasoft Freeware AdAware for years, but I stopped using Lavasoft when they released a slow and unuseful release of their product.

I currently use and suggest this tool :

Online Armor Free (a little “paranoid” but very powerful)

It won’t let firefox update or allow installation of any software unless it is temporarily disabled but thats a goods point because it stops anything from installing without your intervention. So between these 2 I feel pretty secure

    For Freeware:

Its got to be Malwarebyte’s Anti-malware. Its fast and regularly updated. It has little difference with the Pro version (tech-support and real-time guard)

    For Shareware:

It has got to be PCtools Spyware Doctor. Fast, reliable and great tech-support (based upon experience). Webroot Spysweeper is a close second. Its sad that it did not have much improvement through the years. Their focus shifted mostly on their Internet Security Suite.

Since all the malware/spyware/antivirus programs are together here, even those with different functions.  I use all these currently and I’d give them 100 out of 100 if I could. :)

    Freeware:
    -Antivirus:Avast
    –HIPS/Behaviour blocker: Threatfire
–Sandboxes (thought not mentioned here): Sandboxie/geswall
–Malware/Spyware/Trojans/other bad stuff: Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware. Malwarebytes seems to catch more baddies and I would recommend that every user have this.
–Spybot’s immunization feature and HOSTS file
    –Firewall: PCTools Firewall plus.
I used to use SpywareBlaster until I switched to another browser. Spybot’s immunization seems enough.

    Shareware:
I highly recommend Prevx, it’s a brilliant product. Surfright’s Hitman pro is similar using in the cloud AV and malware scanners and equally good.

I have hear good things about Mamutu as HIPS, once exams are over must try it. I have also tried the older version of DriveSentry (freeware), was very good. Must test out the new version soon.

I do have other security measures in place but this is not the place to elaborate.
    Thanks and cheers!

Paid: 1. Malwarebytes AntiMalware 2. PCTools Spyware Doctor 3. PrevX

    Hi to all!

I used to protect my PC against viruses with Avast free version for a few years back but then changed it with Avira’s free version. After a certain and troubled period of time with its updates, you guys came up with an “a-squared AntiMalware 4.5 one year license” and a-squared became my No: 1! Thanks! :)

However, although Spybot S&D is my best freeware choice in spyware removal, i have been using Adaware’s free personal version before. I would prefer Spyware Doctor from the commercial options, since i have given a try to its trial version once, and liked it so much! Hope to see a free licence for Spyware Doctor on 4Free! :)

    Sincerely
    Snowflake

Commercial versions of all old tools do perform more or less likely. But different maker cum vendors include different features in free versions. Some emphasise Antivirus, some antispyware, some firewall, some spam, some scam. Newer and less popular tool makers and vendors to compete in market, to develope user base and to improve field testing and detection capabilites i.e. effectiveness of performance offer freewares so that they can compete with financially sound big tool makers cum vendors. In few years time, these tools become very competitive because of wide userbase and error file submissions.
So every tool is effective where It was and will be where it aims to be. Avira and Avast in Virus detection, zonealarm in firewall, Spysweeper and Spyware Doctor in antispyware live detection and protection, free adaware, spybot search and destroy in offline scanning and Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster in immunizing system especially Bowsers against dangerous sites.
Security suites of these vendors try to do their best but fail in one or two features. Supplement the tools where they are week with a few other tools strong in that area till they reach mature stage of developement.
    Norton 360 for Newbies
For careful users, a combination of Zonealarm free version, MS Security Essentials, Spysweeper or Spyware Doctor commercial or free version, Avast or Avira pro or free and Asquared anti malware pro would help. Now a days these will be my choice.
Ironically I am using Microsoft Security Essentials and Spyware Doctor Google edition for live protection and Microsoft Security Essentials with Asquared would also make best combination. Anyway choice is yours.
For best protection use one security suite and supplement it by one good anti malware, antivirus and antispyware pack.

This one, guys, is another easy one—-SuperAntiSpyware!!! Not so fast, but comprehensive. No difference between paid and free product when it comes to detection. Free apps I use in order of my overall rating (times are for a recent same-day scan of my system at the most thorough setting):
1 Malwarebytes (66 min) - Straightforward. Fast updates and scanning.
2 Spybot S&D (15 min) - Fastest; I use often for quick scans.
3.SUPER Antispyware (75 min) - Well laid-out logically, lots of options if you want them, frequent efficient and informative program and definition updates. (I don’t use the realtime protection.)
4.a-squared Free (190 min) - Takes much longer than Malwarebytes and SAS, and more false positives. If definitions haven’t been updated in a while they can be as much as 70 MB, which can take a long time if a slow connection. I use only if I want to be doubly sure, usually after running the others.

I haven’t tried any of the shareware apps.

    Best Malware/Adware/Spyware/Scumware Removers
    Freeware:
    1. Malwarebytes Antimalware (Free) - I like it’s simplicity and the catch rate.
    2. SUPER Antispyware - It still works with 64-bit (which I use), on demand scanning and a good catch rate.
    3. Spybot S&D - It’s an old familiar one for me. I drifted away for a while, but seem to come back periodically.

    Shareware:
    1. Webroot Spy Sweeper - Used this one for four years on multiple machines. Drifted away with the last subscription expiration. Still think it a good, easy to use and inexpensive solution.
    2. aSquared Antimalware - Haven’t used it much but seems to have a good catch rate.
    3. Malwarebytes Antimalware - Like the real-time protection better than most.

Lots of good products (free and pay). I move back and forth among them and sometimes call in one or another for a speciatly scan.

I just use windows defender that comes with Win7, I usually don’t bother or spend $$ on other malware/adware remover as I found them just a waste of resources (CPU/memory).  Just use your common sense and you will be fine.  Scan your downloaded apps through virtustotal.com and run any suspicious software inside a sandbox like VirtualPC, VirtualBox or Sandboxie first.

    SpyBot Search&Destroy and Malwarebytes

This is the same post I did at BestS Antivirus… Is there a difference between BestS Best Malware/Adware/Spyware/Scumware Remover and Prevention and Antivirus?
I’m sorry, but to me, they are all enemy of my system, and I treat them as one.. :-)
I’m using A-Squared Anti-malware, courtesy of 4Free of course, and I’m very happy with it..
Before then, I’m using a lot of Free Antivirus products, like avg, avira, avast, etc.. the problem with this, is the free version I think is not up for the job..

Because of 4Free, I’m now happy with what I’m using, and I plan to renew my annual subscription once it expires.

Because of 4Free’s offering and Surveys, I managed to find the right one for me.. Thanks 4Free!

    Free:

-Spybot Search and Destroy (www.safernetworking.org). Great tool, although I don’t recommend keeping “Tea Timer” working in the background - just do regular scans with SB.

    Paid:

    - Trend Micro Office scan (catches spy/malware as well as simple virus). A great anti-crap tool which we use at work and works really well and I don’t even notice it’s there (i.e. does not hog the system)
