Mayur’s Review

Well as the name indicates its a DVD authoring tool that allow you to make/create your own DVD.
The main screen shows the video DVD author option along with, convert video to vob, vob to DVD compiler and DVD disc burner options to perform the actions directly.
To fulfill the authoring capabilities, we can also add subtitles, create menu and burn to DVD.

By clicking the video DVD author, we come to the main page.
The whole process is divided into 3 steps (a bulb indicates on which step we are right now)
1) video import
2) menu layout design and
3) saving/burning as DVD

So in the main page we can add/import video files. It has options to select start and end time, choose between standard 4:3 and wide screen 16:9 and the option to create DVD menu
and hence you can also create menus with chapter. We can also select between DVD 5 and DVD 9(dual) formats.

So after importing the video we can add background image to the root menu as well as chapters.There are inbuilt images and also we can add our own images.We can also add music and text to the menu/chapters.

Now the final step is saving/burning.This is titled DVD builder and here we specify the output folder,output format (NTSC / PAl) and the output quality(with some options). Then we can burn it or store the vob file on specified folder and burn it later.

So the whole process can be done in 3 easy steps.

Now comes the real analysis - There was no problem with the installation.

1)Worst ever GUI you could ever imagine. None of the buttons shows what it is supposed (it has only symbols) to do when we move the cursor over it. Only we have to learn it by clicking it. Disaster !!
2)Moreover the 3 steps windows are of different sizes and it is very irritating.
3)In the menu creation page there is no option to remove the back button(Its permanent).
4)Although it supports wide range of video formats, it doesn’t show the supported formats during opening/importing the video file.
5)I almost added  all the common video formats and there was no compatibility issue. Also there was no vob conversion problem.
6)Another main drawback is that it doesn’t have enough advanced features,like editing tools, saving as iso image and preview of end product. We have no idea how the end product would be.
7)While converting the video files to vob it uses a lot CPU resources. At other times its okay. Rate of conversion is good.
8)The burning was okay, almost taking an hour(56 mins).
9)After all these drawbacks, the end product quality was good in deed !!

So its only good enough for personal use. So if one wishes to use it for making presentations or documentaries,its not advisable to use this one.

So the product makers has to really look into GUI and add some more advanced features to make it professional.

A Review from Evandro:

It has a good interface, and even people with little knowledge about videos can use it easilly. The program is relatively small and the conversions are fast. In addition, it enables easy addition of subtitles to the videos, since they are in SRT format.

However, it has some limitations: The screen of chapters is limited to 12 units. If you need to add several short videos, you can directly access only the first 12.

Another downside is that the first menu (title) does not allow customization, since it is a unique model of the program. If you authoring 10 DVDs, all first menu will be the same.

Furthermore, although the menu allows you to change the background image, the program only allows still pictures as background, as well as some options are difficult to configure, as custom chapters, etc.

But the main negative point I would like to point out is the quality of conversions. Although the program does conversions from various types of video files, the result is weak compared to other options. To minimize this problem a little, you can use another program to convert to MPEG2 or VOB.

Tip: I usually use two programs to author DVDs: Format Factory to convert the videos to VOB format (it converts fast and good quality) and then DVD Styler to make the menus and chapter marks (when using DVD Styler is important to uncheck the option to re-encode the videos, if not the program will convert them again, and it will take an eternity). With DVD Styler, you can fully customize menus, with music and even animated backgrounds, and the end result is virtually professional.

In short, if one seeks prioritize facility without care so much about quality, WinX DVD Author is a good option. But if you want to make a production more carefully, but it gives a little more work, I suggest using the Format Factory and DVD Styler.
