DefenseWall HIPS - 4 Free on Gizmo ( ends Sunday December 12 ) - Expired

Hi friends!

John was right when notifying us about this important promotion from Gizmo and Softsphere Technologies. Thank you John !

… And of course we’re also highlighting it in this short article, because this is surely top-notch softwareand we all need to be aware about what’s best for our personal use … But also for the community work on 4Free BestS Surveys and 4Free Software Library.

We’re sure most 4Free’ers have already seen the promotion on Gizmo’s TechSupportAlert.com

.

DefenseWall is a policy-based HIPS that uses software whitelists and blacklists to control the privileges of the programs that run on your PC. By reducing the privileges of Internet-facing and other vulnerable programs it very effectively prevents the installation of malware. Because it is not signature-based it is highly effective in preventing zero-day threats. This makes it an ideal companion for your antivirus scanner.

The program was reviewed by AV Comparatives in May 2009. In their tests it provided 100% against their sample set of malware. The full review can be downloaded as a PDF from here:

http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/single/softsphere-en….

The program being offered has identical features to the latest $29.95 version 2.56 of DefenseWall except that it comes without support or free upgrades. However it can upgraded to the latest, full version 2.x release for $10.95 at any time before April 12, 2010. It can also be upgraded to the upcoming version 3 of DefenseWall with inbuilt firewall for $20.95. Upgrades can be made here.  Should you upgrade please note that Gizmo’s Freeware does not receive any fee or commission.

Version 2.56 supports Windows 7 32 bit as well as Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista 32-bit.

The special free version of DefenseWall can be downloaded from the link below from 2.00PM USA Pacific Standard Time, Thurday 10 December and ending at 2.00 PM Sunday 13 December.

    Hi everyone,

I was looking forward to trying this out.
Then I hopped over to Gladiator Security Forum and in one of Ilya Rabinovich’s posts I read following:
“No updates, no support- but it’s free.”

I repeat: it does not update - much different & more serious than the “not upgrade”, which is pointed out at Gizmo’s. After all, it’s HIPS based, if it’s not updating what exactly protection does one get against zero-day threats?

Considering the situation, installing & running it seems not worth it - what a pitty.

    See you,

    Hi!
It’s the same situation with GOTD promotions, isn’t it ?

I think Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) & windows internal firewall is enough for family users…

    Hi!
You must admit that it depends on your internet activity.
A virtualization solution like Sandboxie or Returnil is not bad at all.
    See here

    Hi again,

    Now I’m a bit confused.
I read the AV Comparatives’ review again and this time I noticed this: ” … click on the “Check for
Updates” option. The program then searches automatically for new versions and downloads
them. After the update, you have to restart the computer.”

So, “updates” and “upgrades” are one & the same thing?
If it is, how does the “not upgrade” thing affect the effectiveness of the app?

Sorry, if I reacted a bit hasty with my previous post.

    Thanks.

Thx for the chance to evaluate this program!
How much protection does one need?
I’m currently using OnlineArmor and Nod32, I sometimes scan my system using Malwarebytes (btw, OnlineArmor doesn’t trust this program).
Anyway, DefenseWall flags anything but Windows system as untrusted… My Opera and Firefox browsers are untrusted programs, I’m not going to run any more programs with this app, just uninstalling it (the uninstaller connects to internet with 404-error, website not found). Security software???

    It is a good software.
If you are using any other HIPS software, like Threatfire, Prevx or Comodo with HIPS on, there will be problems. So a warning to users to only use one or the other & not both or more.
Overall it’s a good program as with all programs promoted by Gizmo. Thanks.

it is wonderful programme , it is better than returnil as it does not use the virtual technology and it uses the less privileged technology thanks

This is one of the top programs out there in the HIPS category. Sadly, I missed it as my internet was offline and I also had to travel. I would have been the first one to grab it. Next time. Thanks for featuring this great offer!
