The 2009 software promotions on Stern.de Adventskalenders have not been impressive at all , aside a aSquared Antimalware 4,5 on the 12th day ( and the above described Softmaker Office 2008 and JetDrive 2009 Pro ) … But all 4Free’ers have already grabed free licenses for asquared, from previous promotions… And others will certainly come !
As for the rest of working promotions on Stern.de Adventskalenders … Most of them are Ashampoo products with promotions already posted on 4Free ( and in “advanced” versions ! )

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve been using O&O Defrag 10 Pro, but JetDrive 2009 looks like it has some the options I’ve hoped that O&O had. I guess I’m going to have to grab that and give it a try!
I have been a content user of OpenOffice 3.1 on PC where I cannot afford to install M$ Office. I installed the JetDrive Pro, hoping to get an offer to upgrade to the new Ultimate. And yes I did, but it was merely “get Ultimate for €30, instead of €40″. Such a poor offer does not make me feel lucky, so I removed it again because I already have Paragon 2010 TotalDefrag. But if one doesn’t have any third party defragger, JetDrive is clearly one of the better ones.

Thanks for brining us so many useful promotions. SoftMaker Office is a really great office suite, it’s quicker than Open Office, but I find an uncanny similarity to Ashampoo Office? Copycat? No?

Anyway, thanks for this and all the other great software. As I understand it Ashampoo Office and Softmaker Office are pretty the same. On my system both programs take about 2.5 seconds to launch and a side by side comparison in xplorer2 lite further illustrates the similarities. However A O 2008 is 50.9 MB installed and S O 2008 is 67 MB installed which is an over 30% increase in space used, unfortunately I don’t know enough to tell if the additional size offers any worthwhile benefits.

Ashampoo Office and Softmaker Office are basically the same product. Ashampoo Office is a rebrand of SoftMaker Office but SoftMaker includes BasicMaker, that allows users to create scripts in the SoftMaker Basic programming languages, basically similar on how VBA works for Microsoft Office, while Ashampoo Office does not provides this scripting language.

Mediocre, at best. The version offered here is NOT the version listed on your chart … it (evidently) only defrags files and doesn’t optimize them. There are a number of freeware programs that do much more and consume much fewer resources/memory. As for the other features listed of cleaning memory and the registry, nope. This doesn’t do that.
Try IOBIT Smart Defrag as an alternative. Free and does much more.

The 2008 version of Softmaker Office does not seem to be able to deal with .docx or other MS Office 2007 files, even though MS Office 2003 files hold formatting much better than if opened via Open Office. At the same time Open Office is able to deal with MS Office 2007 formats. Is next version of Softmaker Office compatible with MSO7 files?

Unlike Dick, I found JetDrive more impressive than Smart Defrag and all the others I’ve tried. (Definitely including O&O Defrag!) On my computer, it claimed to do all the things Dick said it can’t. ?
I grabbed Ashampoo Office Suite 2008 quite a while ago and use it a lot, like it a lot. No, it won’t open DOCX, etc., but there are work-arounds. For me, one work-around is MS Office 2007, which I have but hate waiting for! (I got it on the best software deal I’ve ever gotten — for WAY cheaper than free!!) I think the next version of Ashampoo O.S. does, but I haven’t seen it (or the SoftMaker version) for free. Yet.
BTW, I was having trouble posting comments here with Opera 10. Until now, I had to open a different browser. Tonight, I tried hitting F12, “Edit Site Preferences”, hit the “Network” Tab, and chose “Mask as Internet Explorer” — AND IT’S WORKING!!

Got SoftMaker during the original promo, but haven’t come around to testing it yet.
Interesting reading by Boot, though I’d be interested to know if using SoftMaker puts you out to the same vulnerabilities as MS Office (look at all the monthly patches) - any one?

I’m not sure I understand what your “work around” is to open .docx if you’re using MS Office 2007 to do so.
